Traffic rises, risks persist #MarineTraffic data recorded 41 verified crossings through the monitored Strait of Hormuz zone on 7 July, up from 36 the previous day. Commercial west to east movements continued to lead activity, while laden crude, dry bulk and LPG voyages remained prominent. However, routing patterns reflected continued uncertainty, with increased use of IMO routes alongside a high share of Dark or Unknown transits and declining use of the Omani route. The security environment also deteriorated following two newly confirmed tanker incidents near Oman, while the introduction of OFAC General License X1 tightened the compliance landscape for Iranian related trade. The combination of operational risk and regulatory pressure suggests confidence remains measured despite stronger traffic volumes.

Chokepoint traffic holds, risks shift #MarineTraffic data show vessel traffic remained active through Hormuz and Bab el-Mandeb last week, although headline volumes mask significant changes in the underlying mix. Hormuz recorded 121 crossings, up 2.5% from 118. Laden crossings fell 27% to 35, while ballast movements rose to 61 and sanctioned crossings increased from 9 to 16. Iran’s unilateral routing scheme accounted for 46.3% of crossings. Bab el-Mandeb recorded 269 crossings, up 3.1% and roughly 2.2 times Hormuz volumes. Laden transits increased to 131, while dark transits fell from 23 to 15. The figures show why vessel-level tracking matters when assessing changing maritime risk.

CMA CGM containership passes Strait of Hormuz A French-owned containership has successfully transited the Strait of Hormuz, marking the first French-owned vessel to pass through the waterway since hostilities escalated at the end of February. According to #MarineTraffic data, the Malta-flagged CMA CGM Kribi crossed the strait on 2 April after updating her AIS destination twice, first from “CGPNR” to “French Owner” at 12:41 UTC, and then to “Owner France” at 13:18 UTC. The vessel had originally been bound for Pointe-Noire, Republic of the Congo. The 255-metre container ship, built in 2014 and with a capacity of 5,380 TEU, departed Ghantoot, UAE, on 28 March at 08:59 UTC. The vessel is currently underway using engine and sailing south along the coast of Oman at around 10.3 knots, with a reported draught of 13 metres, indicating she is laden.

Strait of Hormuz transit and risk monitor Transit activity in the Strait of Hormuz strengthened over the weekend, with crossings reaching 10 on Saturday and 11 on Sunday, according to #MarineTraffic data. Sanctioned vessels accounted for almost half of Sunday’s movements, highlighting a shift in traffic composition alongside rising volumes. No verified physical attacks or incidents during this period, despite elevated geopolitical rhetoric. While this suggests near term operational stability, evolving political developments may still shape vessel behaviour and risk exposure in the days ahead. Read the latest analysis by Dimitris Ampatzidis, Kpler Senior Risk & Compliance Analyst: Here’s a playback of vessel activity in the Strait of Hormuz over the past two days.

Transit patterns diverge #MarineTraffic data highlights diverging patterns across two of the world's most strategically important maritime chokepoints. Between 24 and 26 July, the Strait of Hormuz recorded 29 verified crossings, including 21 vessels exiting the Middle East Gulf and 8 entering. Routing remained evenly split, with 14 transits using the Iranian Unilateral Scheme, 14 classified as Route Undetermined, and one using the Hormuz Traffic Separation Scheme. By comparison, Bab el-Mandeb recorded 100 verified crossings, with 51 vessels entering the Red Sea and 49 exiting. Ninety vessels followed the Traffic Separation Scheme, while 10 completed dark transits. Several vessels that had previously delayed or reversed course later completed their crossings, suggesting operators are continuing to assess risk dynamically rather than avoiding the route altogether.

Russian tanker diverts course amid US naval presence A sanctioned Russian oil tanker has made three failed attempts to reach Venezuela after a US Navy destroyer blocked its route. According to #MarineTraffic data, the Seahorse departed from the Port of Matanzas in Cuba on November 9 at 8:54 a.m. local time. While sailing toward Venezuela, the vessel made a U-turn on November 14 after altering its course to 160 degrees. According to media reports, the vessel was intercepted by the U.S. Navy destroyer USS Stockdale. The laden tanker made another U-turn on November 16, rejoining its initial route, before being intercepted again in the early hours of November 17, after which it made yet another attempt to continue its voyage. The vessel is currently sailing in the Caribbean at 10 knots with an unknown destination. Watch the playback of the tanker's movements:

March crossings through Strait of Hormuz led by liquid tankers According to #MarineTraffic and Kpler data, a total of 220 vessels transited the Strait of Hormuz during March across the dry bulk, liquids, LPG and LNG segments. Liquid tankers accounted for 111 crossings, or 51% of the total, followed by 82 dry bulk vessels (37%) and 27 LPG carriers (12%). No LNG crossings were recorded in March. Traffic remained skewed toward west-to-east movements out of the Gulf, which made up 149 crossings, or 68% of the monthly total. East-to-west transits into the Gulf accounted for 71 crossings, or 32%, highlighting an uneven flow pattern through one of the world’s most critical maritime chokepoints.

Chokepoint activity diverges #MarineTraffic data showed a widening contrast in vessel movements across the Strait of Hormuz and Bab el-Mandeb. Hormuz recorded eight confirmed crossings, a 33% daily decline, with most traffic following the Iranian Unilateral Scheme. Activity through Bab el-Mandeb increased 18% to 26 confirmed crossings, including three dark transits. The IMO reported no additional confirmed vessel attacks. MarineTraffic continues to provide visibility into vessel movements, routing decisions and changing traffic patterns across both waterways.

Strait Traffic remains resilient #MarineTraffic data recorded 108 verified vessel transits through the Strait of Hormuz between 3 and 5 July, with 43 crossings on 3 July, 34 on 4 July and 31 on 5 July. Traffic was broadly balanced by direction, with 60 East-to-West crossings and 48 West-to-East crossings. Route selection remained fragmented, with 44 vessels using the Iranian Route, 30 using the Omani Route, 10 following the IMO Route and 24 classified as Dark or Unknown. The transits covered a wide range of vessel types, including tankers, container ships, bulk carriers and gas carriers, underscoring that commercial shipping continues to move through the Strait while operators maintain diversified routing strategies amid ongoing geopolitical and maritime security risks.

Strait traffic trends lower #MarineTraffic data show vessel traffic declining across both the Strait of Hormuz and Bab el-Mandeb on 25 August. The Strait of Hormuz recorded five confirmed crossings, down 28.6% day on day from seven. Two vessels entered the Middle East Gulf and three exited, with all five using the Iranian Unilateral Scheme. Bab el-Mandeb recorded 36 confirmed crossings, down 7.7% from 39. Fifteen vessels entered the Red Sea and 21 exited. Two dark transits were also identified, adding to continued scrutiny of #vessel movements through the region’s key maritime chokepoints.
