Instead of a coherent and cohesive global response, #COVID19 has been marked by a chaotic patchwork of responses. This is why we need the #PandemicAccord - that countries are now negotiating - to work in cooperation with each other to prepare for and respond to future pandemics.

According to the WHO Director-General, “The next pandemic is not a question of if, but of when. And we cannot afford to repeat the mistakes of the past.” That is why WHO Member States are negotiating a new #PandemicAccord and amendments to the International Health Regulations, to strengthen the legal framework for the global response to pandemics. What he doesn’t discuss is that the previous WHO RECOMMENDATIONS (via the accord and amendments) will now become MANDATORY OBLIGATIONS and WHO's Director-General will be allowed to declare a Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC), or the potential for one, without meeting any specific criteria. PHEICS and potential PHEICs could be declared without the agreement of the concerned Member State or States. The WHO would then assume management of the PHEIC and issue BINDING directives to the Member States. A truly historic evening at the #WHA78: the #PandemicAccord resolution was approved in Committee A with 124 in favour, 0 against and 11 abstentions. The final step: adoption in plenary tomorrow morning. My thanks once again to World Health Organization (WHO) Member States for choosing to keep the world safer. 🙏

#COVID19 has shown that we can only face shared threats with a shared response, based on a shared commitment to solidarity & equity. The #PandemicAccord is about an agreement between nations to work in cooperation with each other to prepare for & respond to epidemics & pandemics.
