2/ We sought to expand the repertoire of ICMS-based artificial #touch to confer greater dexterity to brain-controlled bionic hands. We conveyed info about the local geometrical features of objects, leveraging our understanding of how these sensory features are encoded in #S1.

3/ First, we simultaneously delivered spatially-patterned ICMS through electrodes whose projected fields – the patch of skin over which the sensation is experienced – were arranged in a line. Unprompted, the participants reported the sensation of an #edge.

4/ Adding temporal patterning to the paradigms, we sequentially delivered ICMS through electrodes, which induced sensations of #movement across their skin. We could also systematically manipulate the #direction and #speed of perceived motion across the skin.

5/ Finally, we integrated this rich feedback in the brain-controlled bionic hand! We conclude that principled spatiotemporal patterning of ICMS can evoke #rich and #complex sensations to expand the repertoire of artificial touch in bionic hands.
