Worried about ChatGPT making up fake research papers that don't exist? Here's a simple trick to make sure it doesn't. This will take you only two minutes. And it works with ChatGPT 3.5.

2. Now when you ask ChatGPT any question, it will give only give you published sources. I asked ChatGPT to give me the titles of five books by David Damrosch. It gave me four books and an edited volume in which Damrosch has an essay. Not a single fake reference.

3. With this simple set of custom instruction, ChatGPT won't create any fake references even if you ask it. I asked to make up titles of books by Damrosch. It simply declined.

4. Without custom instructions I asked it to make up titles of books by Damrosch and it did that. All ten titles it gave me were made up.

PS: ChatGPT 3.5 is hallucinating even with custom instructions. GPT-4 seems to be doing reasonably well with custom instructions.

Dr Mushtaq, thank you for sharing. Custom Instructions work wonders for GPT 3.5. My question, if I were to upgrade to GPT 4, do I still need to make new Custom Instructions? Or is it already there? Based on the GPT 3.5 history?

I think custom instructions are not dependent on the model you use.

It isn't work for ChatGPT3.5. I have checked it.

This was very helpful, thank you
