12 SO-101 robot arms for my robotics class 🤖 Last year, students built their SO-101s from scratch. This year, with help from our TA Qifan Zhang, we handed out 12 pre-built arms so they can jump straight into arm calibration! More time for robots!

Would you be willing to take a look at quackd? It supports LeRobot (SO-101). I open-sourced quackd: a brain for robots. You tell the robot what you want in plain language, like "find the ball and kick it", and an LLM plans the steps using the skills the robot already has (I know this is only an arm that can't kick). Supports local LLMs as well. Goals live in .duck files, the same idea as the .skill files Claude uses, but for a robot.

@ZQ_fantastic Any issues with building from scratch? I will ask the students in my class to build from scratch this semester, including 3D-printing the parts. My students are in mechanical engineering, though.

@ZQ_fantastic Handing out pre-built arms is a sensible trade for this class. Students still get the calibration problems, but with more time left to try a method, inspect the failure and run it again.

I’ve visited countless schools, I know Alberta teachers work hard. Our offer hires 3,000 new teachers and provides a 12 percent raise, over 4 years, giving them the highest take home pay in western Canada, so students get better access to their teachers and greater support in class. It is a real plan that puts help in classrooms now. We hope the ATA says yes so we can deliver this for students, families, and teachers this year.

Should humanoids have tails? Current legged robots struggle with center of mass control and quick stabilization. Adding more DOF to legs gets complicated fast. Nature already solved this: Cheetahs, kangaroos, dinosaurs – they use tails for dynamic balance, sharp turns, and recovery from unexpected shifts. The robotics insight? Let the tail handle it. Virginia Tech built serpentine tails that compensate in real-time – so bipeds and quadrupeds can handle ledges, lateral shifts, and turns without rewriting their entire gait. Simple solution. Obvious in hindsight. 🦖🤖

We expect the numbers to increase gradually, and a better response is anticipated this year. Students completing the fourth year are also eligible for direct admission to one-year master's programmes. Admissions are based on CUET scores, and students need not worry about changes in Class 12 marks. Students should apply carefully, choose as many programme options as possible, and fill in their preferences thoughtfully. The admission process is transparent, and there is no need for concern.
