1984 was the year Van Halen conquered the planet.

Agree that they were riding high but the 81 tour was tighter. They rushed through Unchained on the 84 tour and sang the chorus differently. 81 tour video is the holy grail of classic VH. Would have been better choice to release 81 live album than Tokyo in 2015.

I saw Van Halen live 8 times between 1978 and 1984. The 1978 shows were the best live performances and each successive year wasn’t as good as the previous one. But overall, they still put on a great show every time.

I recorded one of those at 1982 with a walkman mmmmaybe at 10 y.o. or some. Still have it!

The explosion for DLR is insane. But VH conquered the planet in 82-83. Diver Down. US Festival. 1984 just continued their domination. Then, in 1985, that band imploded and was never the same again. Every version since then has paled. Just ask Alex.

I saw Van Halen on the opening night of the 1984 Tour. The show was barely a week after the album was released. I still remember buying my ticket, before the album was even released, from Hoyt's Stereo.

They ruled all of the 80’s. Van Halen's first 6 albums ruled during the Van Hagar era too. Van Hagar did better on Billboard which doesn’t mean squat. There was no better 80’s band than VH with DLR. Same could be said for Metallica's first 5ish albums in the 90’s.

They couldn’t conquer the planet if they didn’t play the planet. Their U.K. tour lasted 60 minutes of which 25 mins was solos . So may have been USA but rest of world no.

I was there at the old Montreal Forum on April 19, 1984 & not only that I was backstage after the gig & at the Hyatt Regency afterwards. You know that movie "Detroit Rock City" well my evening with VH was real & a million times wilder & should make a movie about that F'N night!
