The comeback arc of Peter Beardsley was complete on 17/05/1994 with his goal vs Greece at Wembley. In a World Cup warm-up, though NOT for England, the USA-bound Greeks were put to the sword 5-0. “Pedro” had inexplicably been left out of Graham Taylor’s England squads for the last couple of years of his reign. New boss Terry Venables recalled him in his first squad vs Denmark, and that decision was justified in his second game back.

Did anybody stay up to watch England get battered in Boston on 09/06/1993? With the World Cup a year away, hosts USA, set up a practice run with the US Cup. They invited 2 of the favourites for the big one, and England to join them. ITV threw the kitchen sink at it with Big Ron in the studio and Rodney Marsh on comms. England, for their part, maintained their recent terrible form and lost 0-2.

World Cup 1990 was very special to me. I was almost 13. With it being held in Italy, the kick-off times were perfect for me in England. Every day, the school playground would be full of World Cup chat in between swapping stickers. Although the football might not have been the most entertaining, as a young England fan, it was the best summer ever. Take me back! Heroes for life were made that summer.

World Cup 1990 was very special to me. I was almost 13. With it being held in Italy, the kick-off times were perfect for me in England. I remember a huge feeling of disappointment and missed opportunity on 16/06/1990 when England drew their second game at Italia 90. Scarred by their defeat to the Dutch at Euro 88, the European champions were to be feared. However, it was England who had the chances to win it in the second half. Bull and Lineker both missed opportunities, Gazza was brilliant, and Pearce had a free-kick ruled out. England had matched the Dutch and, on another day, could easily have taken both points.

In my view this is one of, if not THE goal of the World Cup. Just 5 minutes earlier he gave up on the opportunity to take a penalty which had he stored would have made him England’s greatest World Cup goal scorer. He sacrificed that opportunity, in order for his teammate Bukayo Saka to score a hat trick, which he did. He then went on to deliver a masterclass in sublime ball control culminating in this brilliant goal to make it 6 - 4 to England against France. Sometimes the good guys DO win. Jude Bellingham is an outstanding human being as well as a talent of a generation. I salute him. 🎥 TikTok -
