WHEN HUMIDITY BROUGHT DOWN A STEALTH GIANT — THE $1.4BN B-2 CRASH On February 23, 2008, a Northrop Grumman B-2 Spirit crashed seconds after takeoff from Andersen Air Force Base — the most expensive air crash in history at the time. The cause wasn’t engine failure or pilot error. Moisture contamination in 3 of the aircraft’s 24 air data sensors caused them to transmit incorrect data to the flight control computers. The system miscalculated airspeed, altitude, and pitch attitude. As the jet rotated, the computers interpreted the data as if the nose were pointed downward and commanded an abrupt nose-up input. The aircraft over-rotated, exceeded its critical angle of attack, and stalled almost immediately after liftoff. The left wing struck the runway. Both pilots ejected safely, with one sustaining serious injuries. Worth noting, the Northrop B-2 Spirit bomber was valued at $1.4billion back in 2008, value has since risen (approx) $2 billion per aircraft. 📹: Stephen Trimble(YouTube)
