Failed Robotaxi ride in 91° heat. I LOVE Tesla Tesla Robotaxi and tonight is date night and I was SO EXCITED to take my Wife on an Unsupervised Robotaxi ride for drinks and dinner in Austin. I hailed the ride after “High Service Demand” cleared after ~15mins of trying. A red Model Y shows up with zero Robotaxi markings on it and a guy driving in the front seat. I was immediately let down but we had already waited so long and we needed to reach out destination so we got in. His hands were on the wheel the whole time and it felt like it was last year when the program was just starting. The Supervisor was nice but the ride went sideways. We tried to go to Zanzibar in Austin but the car drove right by the entrance and took us ~a 1/4 mile way out of the way to a residential apartment building. We asked the supervisor what was going on and he called Support and told us to press the support button. Support came on the line and said there was nothing they could do. We had to walk in the 91° heat. We were dressed in nice clothes and shoes not made for walking. My Wife was NOT impressed. I was embarrassed as I had talked up the service so much. On our walk to our destination, we witnessed a Waymo dropping off a rider in the place that we should have been dropped off. Additionally, when we arrived at our destination, hot and sweaty, we saw that there was plenty of room to drop us off. Very frustrating. The best part is, we paid for this experience.

FSD Beta 12: The One Where It Parks Itself After consistently having the car either park itself into a stall (if my destination was a parking lot) or pull to the curb out of the roadway (if the destination was on a street), I experienced this… Set the destination to a random alley in Downtown Sacramento. The car pulls into the alley, driving slow. Based on my previous experiences earlier in the drive it appears to be looking for a spot. Seems like it couldn’t find one it could fit into. Instead of stopping in the middle of the roadway (how v11 would have performed) the car rerouted itself around the block and back into the alley. When it gets back into the alley, it immediately parks into a parking stall instead of proceeding all the way to the destination. This is EXACTLY what I would have done if I was driving. After seeing there was no parking spots the first time, I would have driven around the block and parked in the first available spot I could find. Whether or not this is what actually happened is up for debate. But based on the previous 5 or so tests I performed before this, it really does seem like it was looking for a spot to park. I’ll post the video of the entire drive with the other parking examples later on today. Maybe Elon Musk can chime in as to what happened here?

I spent the past 2 days taking Robotaxi rides with Emmet Peppers in Austin, TX. At the start he was excited but as an investor he was intentionally trying to be critical and find flaws. We had some interesting discussions on each ride. We both agreed that trying Robotaxi in person is so different than viewing videos online. There's much more to take in and experience in person. At the end, Robotaxi had won Emmet over. Every ride was nearly perfect. It's really hard to believe what Tesla has done.

FSD V14.2.2.4 Cutting Through a Gas Station Parking Lot? I don't think I've ever seen FSD drive like this before, but on my drive this morning it happened twice in a row. Rather than proceed to the stop light, it cut into a gas station and drove through the parking lot, then did the same at the next intersection. Afterward, it pulled into a parking lot with "Do Not Enter" signs at the entrance and parked in a stall. The real issue is that I was navigating to a Tesla Supercharger nowhere near that parking lot.

I got to ride the Zoox Robotaxi today. It is pretty amazing and I can see these being very popular in the future. You can ride it too over at Resorts World Las Vegas where you catch the rideshares on the way to self parking. There are two routes and I got to do both. One route goes around the Resorts World property and the other heads down near Luxor and Excalibur and back. The rides are complimentary for now.

When we went to dinner we had to walk a block over. I’m not sure maybe I should have reached out to support, but when it picked us up from dinner it picked us up in front of the restaurant. So not sure if the drop off was a little ways away in an attempt to avoid congested areas.

Here are a few of their observations: “We decided to try a Waymo while we were there as well. We were able to take two trips. The first ride wasn’t bad, pretty similar to robotaxi. The second ride almost hit a pedestrian in one instance and parked cars while making a left turn on a neighborhood street. It had to slam on the breaks both times. Also it took a left turn through a yellow light at the last second before red. During our conversation we talked about whether you could get into the driver seat of Waymo. I took this video walking around the car. It shows that door handle recessed vs the others are popped out, so no way to get in. While we enjoyed both services, we thought the robotaxi was a smoother more confident ride. Here's my first Waymo ride in Nashville last night. It started off well, but the vehicle got confused and stuck 4 minutes in. After about 10 minutes of trying, rider support got it moving again, but then it couldn't continue, so they had to escalate to another specialist. After another ~10 minutes, they said the Waymo could not complete the trip, and that I should call an Uber or Lyft ride to reach my destination. I was 3-4 minutes from my destination when the Waymo initially got stuck. The vehicle was on call with support for about 20 minutes in total. While it would have been nice to reach my destination lol, I'm honestly not mad about it because it was interesting to see the whole process of them trying to get it going again and how Waymo support deals with situations like this (which are pretty rare). The support team was really nice and communicative. Have to fly back home to New England tomorrow, but hopefully will try another robotaxi ride in Nashville in the future, and of course other cities.
