I never wrote about Israeli politics but I have to take this off my heart! 20 years ago Israel left the Gaza Strip, and destroyed the homes of the thousands of Jews that lived there. Entire villages were demolished in a matter of hours. This historic disengagement was "sold" to the Israelis as the only way to live in peace with the palestinians. Today we know that leaving Gaza brought us only war and death. It also left dozens of villages and cities IN ISRAEL way more vulnerable. The Gazans cheered when we left and celebrated it as a victory. They immediately used the areas evacuated by the Israelis to build terrorist camps. Thousands of rockets were fired on Israel since 2005. The hostilities were always downplayed by the various Israeli governments and by the IDF, failing for 18 years to come to terms with the reality and consequences of leaving Gaza. The final outcome of this enormous historical mistake was the October 7th massacre. One would expect to find a general consensus among the Israelis about this obvious story, yet there are still people in Israel who choose the stick to the illusion that an agreement can be achieved with Hamas, and that a solution is possible. These people are exactly what GUARANTEES that a new massacre will happen in the future. I believe that the majority of Israelis see reality for what it is, and will reject wholeheartedly the people who ask to end the war and keep Hamas in power in Gaza.

18 years ago today, Hamas staged a military coup and violently took over Gaza. But to understand how it got to that point, we need to go back a little bit. Gaza was a part of the Ottoman Empire for centuries, and later, the British mandate, and in 1948, was under Egyptian control. In 1967, in the defensive Six-Day War, Israel seized over the Gaza Strip intending to hand it over in future peace negotiations. In 2005, Israel unilaterally withdrew from Gaza and handed control over to the Palestinian people. While the move wasn't part of a formal peace agreement, it reflected the broader Land for Peace thinking. Israel gives land in exchange for peaceful living with its neighbors. This worked relatively well with Egypt in the Sinai Peninsula and with Jordan. Many Israelis, me included, hoped that Gaza would become a model for Palestinian self-rule and a step towards a peaceful Middle East. Then in 2006, came the Palestinian legislative elections. I remember the warnings very clearly. The United States, European leaders, Israel, even the United Nations, everyone cautioned the Palestinians against allowing Hamas, a jihadi terrorist organization which aims to enact an Islamist caliphate to run for elections. We all knew what Hamas was. Their founding charter openly calls for the destruction of Israel and for the murder of Jews. Now, allowing Hamas to participate in the Palestinian elections is like letting the KKK or a neo-Nazi group to appear on the ballot and pretend that they're just another political party. They're not. But they ran anyway and they won, narrowly, 74 out of 132 seats. Most Palestinians weren't voting for terror. They were voting actually against the corruption and dysfunction of the Palestinian Authority, but Hamas saw the outcome very differently. Ismail Haniyeh was appointed prime minister and a unity government was supposed to be formed, but Hamas had no intention of governing responsibly or sharing power. Hamas refused to recognize Israel, stop its violence, or accept previous agreements, and in response, the international community cut off their fundings. Tensions quickly escalated between Hamas and Fatah, which was the political party that controlled most of the Palestinian Authority's governing institutions and security forces, and on June 10th, 2007, gun battles broke out across Gaza. Hamas turned its weapons against their own people and launched a bloody coup against the Palestinian Authority security forces. Political opponents were dragged through the streets, thrown from rooftops, and executed, obviously without trial. That's when Hamas leader, Yahya Sinwar, got his nickname, the Butcher of Khan Yunis. Four days later, on June 14th, Hamas took full control of Gaza and began imposing their version of Sharia law. Hamas destroyed Gaza. They received billions of dollars in international aid over the years, but instead of investing in hospitals, schools, jobs, they used that money to create the most fortified piece of land on Earth, build an elaborated terror tunnel system, and stock up on ammunitions, rockets, and bombs. Since taking power, they've held the people of Gaza hostage while launching endless attacks on Israeli civilians. It didn't have to be this way. Gaza could've become the next Singapore or Dubai. It's a beautiful coastal city with so much potential, but Hamas chose jihadism over jobs and terror over technology. And on October 7th, 2023, Hamas showed the entire world what it had been working on, and it was not a Palestinian state. The suffering in Gaza is not the result of Israel. It is the result of Hamas. The Palestinian people never asked for this. They didn't vote for a dictatorship. Hamas took over Gaza by force and they've ruled it with fear ever since. So if you care about Palestinians, if you care about peace, you should be calling to free Palestine, but not from Israel. You should be calling to free Palestine from Hamas.

It was incredibly divisive in Israel. It tore the country apart. He took all the 8,000 citizens who were living in Gaza, and he pulled them out kicking and screaming back across the border. He even went so far as to order the rabbis to go to the cemeteries and to disinter the Jewish bodies in the cemeteries, to say to the Palestinian people, "You make your own state here in Gaza. You're by the water. You get billions and billions of dollars in aid from the United States and Europe and other countries around the world every year. You can be a Singapore in the Middle East." One year later in 2006, Hamas overwhelmingly won the election in Gaza by promising to fight a never-ending war of extermination against the Jews. They haven't had a single election since. And many people believe that the many wars that Hamas has started with Israel since 2005, including the war on October 7th, were a direct result of Israelis disengaging from Gaza in 2005. Hamas leadership has been living lavishly in Qatar while the people that they claim to represent in Gaza are suffering. They’ve been directing a war from the comfort of their five-star hotels for almost two years, refusing to release the 48 hostages that are still being held in Gaza. Today, Israeli officials announced that they took a targeted action against these Hamas leaders who have been terrorizing the region for years. This war in Gaza is brutal. It has to end. Palestinians are suffering, Israelis are suffering. The entire region is suffering. The people of Gaza, the Arab League, the US and Israel are all saying the same thing. Hamas must be removed from power. Inside Gaza, people are risking their lives to protest Hamas, and they’re being silenced, beaten, even killed on the streets. They know that Hamas is the reason Gaza is in ruin. They know that Hamas is the one who started the war, and Hamas is the reason that it hasn’t ended yet. And this has been Hamas’s plan all along, force Israel into a war it never wanted to fight, but has to win. Hamas spent years preparing the October 7th attack. They knew exactly what an urban war in a densely populated area would look like. They all went into hiding and left their people out to suffer. And these devastating consequences for the people of Gaza? That was a part of their strategy, to delegitimize Israel’s standing in the eyes of the world. They knew what they were doing, and Israel could not and still cannot allow these jihadists to live on its borders. No other nation would allow that. This is the linchpin of the entire conflict right now. Once Hamas is gone, the war ends, the suffering ends, and Gaza can finally rebuild. So today, Israel sent a message that there’s no safe place for terrorists anywhere on Earth, and we all need to stand together and say release the hostages, remove Hamas, end the war.

This is a pertinent clip from Sam Harris on the moral difference between Israel and her enemies. The moral difference comes down to understanding the answer to this question: what would each side do if they had the power to do it? TRANSCRIPT: The truth is that there is an obvious, undeniable, and hugely consequential moral difference between Israel and her enemies. The Israelis are surrounded by people who have explicitly genocidal intentions towards them. The charter of Hamas is explicitly genocidal. It looks forward to a time, based on Koranic prophesy, when the earth itself will cry out for Jewish blood, where the trees and the stones will say “O Muslim, there’s a Jew hiding behind me. Come and kill him.” This is a political document. We are talking about a government that was voted into power by a majority of Palestinians. The discourse in the Muslim world about Jews is utterly shocking. Not only is there widespread Holocaust denial—there’s Holocaust denial that then asserts that we will do it for real if given the chance. The only thing more obnoxious than denying the Holocaust is to say that it should have happened; it didn’t happen, but if we get the chance, we will accomplish it. There are children’s shows in the Palestinian territories and elsewhere that teach five-year-olds about the glories of martyrdom and about the necessity of killing Jews. And this gets to the heart of the moral difference between Israel and her enemies. And this is something I discussed in The End of Faith. To see this moral difference, you have to ask what each side would do if they had the power to do it. What would the Jews do to the Palestinians if they could do anything they wanted? Well, we know the answer to that question, because they can do more or less anything they want. The Israeli army could kill everyone in Gaza tomorrow. So what does that mean? Well, it means that, when they drop a bomb on a beach and kill four Palestinian children, as happened last week, this is almost certainly an accident. They’re not targeting children. They could target as many children as they want. Every time a Palestinian child dies, Israel edges ever closer to becoming an international pariah. So the Israelis take great pains not to kill children and other noncombatants. What do we know of the Palestinians? What would the Palestinians do to the Jews in Israel if the power imbalance were reversed? Well, they have told us what they would do. For some reason, Israel’s critics just don’t want to believe the worst about a group like Hamas, even when it declares the worst of itself. We’ve already had a Holocaust and several other genocides in the 20th century. People are capable of committing genocide. When they tell us they intend to commit genocide, we should listen. There is every reason to believe that the Palestinians would kill all the Jews in Israel if they could. Would every Palestinian support genocide? Of course not. But vast numbers of them—and of Muslims throughout the world—would. Needless to say, the Palestinians in general, not just Hamas, have a history of targeting innocent noncombatants in the most shocking ways possible. They’ve blown themselves up on buses and in restaurants. They’ve massacred teenagers. They’ve murdered Olympic athletes. They now shoot rockets indiscriminately into civilian areas. And again, the charter of their government in Gaza explicitly tells us that they want to annihilate the Jews—not just in Israel but everywhere.

If the international community is really sincere about disarming Hamas and granting Gaza a new future, then they have to stop treating Hamas as a political entity and understand that it is a terrorist militia. The only way to make a terrorist group disarm is through military power. The only party that can effectively use military power to disarm Hamas is Israel... Yes, Israel, which you have tied its hands in the hope that terrorists will comply with diplomacy! It is amazing that some people still believe Hamas when they say they will dissolve and leave the government in Gaza! Hamas has already lost the government in Gaza since October 7. The IDF just announced that they conducted the largest operation of the war since October 7th, capturing 358 terrorists, including numerous senior leaders from Hamas and Palestinian Islamic Jihad, which is another terrorist organization in Gaza. Where were they hiding? In the Shifa Hospital. Yeah, the same hospital that the IDF cleared out in November and found signs that Israeli hostages were held there, underground terrorist tunnels, and Hamas’s central command under the hospital. Hamas went back to Shifa and barricaged themselves inside because Hamas hides in hospitals. I don’t know how many times I have to say this, but Hamas continuously puts Palestinian civilians in harms way, by turning hospitals into their terrorist hideouts. Meanwhile, the IDF has been supplying food, water, and generators to the hospital because this is a war against Hamas, not against the Palestinians in Gaza. This is what we’re going up against. And Israel will continue to do everything it can to protect civilians, while targeting Hamas terrorists. Gaza will only be free when Hamas is defeated.

“Free Gaza From Hamas” Really Means “Free Gaza From All Palestinians” Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu continues to insist that Israel will carry out Trump’s ethnic cleansing plans for Gaza, saying the following on Sunday about “the final stage” of his agenda: “Hamas will lay down its weapons. Its leaders will be allowed to leave. We will see to the general security in the Gaza Strip and will allow the realization of the Trump plan for voluntary migration. This is the plan. We are not hiding this and are ready to discuss it at any time.” Netanyahu’s suggestion that Trump’s plan for the migration of Palestinians out of Gaza would be “voluntary” is misleading in two separate ways. Firstly, it is nonsensical to deliberately and systematically make a place uninhabitable and then claim that anyone who leaves that place would be leaving voluntarily. Israeli spinmeisters have been pushing this narrative since the early days of the onslaught, and it’s transparently bogus; telling people they can leave or starve to death is exactly the same as forcing them out at gunpoint. Secondly, Trump’s plan for the ethnic cleansing of Gaza is not “voluntary” on its face. Trump has explicitly said “all” Palestinians are to be removed from the enclave and would not be allowed to return, which of course necessarily means that anyone who wants to stay will not be permitted to. A Knesset member from Netanyahu’s Likud party named Amit Halevi was just on Israeli radio saying that the plan is “to occupy the territory to cleanse it of the enemy,” adding that Israel needs “to return to Gaza permanently and control this space, because it is part of our homeland.” I mean, how much more explicit do they need to be? When Israel apologists respond to chants of “Free Gaza” with “Free Gaza from Hamas,” what they really mean is “Free Gaza from all Palestinians.” The agenda they are cheerleading has ultimately nothing to do with Hamas — it’s about purging a Palestinian territory of Palestinians and replacing them with Israeli Jews. It’s yet another Israeli land grab and yet another drive to eliminate Palestinians from their historic homeland. If this was really about freeing Palestinians from Hamas, then why is Israel also seizing on this political moment to advance ethnic cleansing agendas in the West Bank, where Hamas does not govern? Defense Minister Israel Katz is on record saying of the occupied West Bank that “We must deal with the threat just as we deal with the terrorist infrastructure in Gaza,” and the Gaza playbook is being increasingly utilized there. Tens of thousands have been displaced as the Jenin refugee camp has been made uninhabitable under an aggressive Israeli bombing campaign, with hundreds of homes actively destroyed — not to combat Hamas, but to get rid of the Palestinians. Because that’s all this has ever been about. The western press have been obsessively covering the fact that some demonstrators in Gaza have been voicing discontent with Hamas, after those same press outlets just spent a year and a half ignoring millions of anti-genocide protesters around the world and running cover for Israel’s mass atrocities in Gaza. “Look!” we are told. “Those demonstrations prove that the people of Gaza want to be free from Hamas! This vindicates everything Israel and its allies have been doing!” But, again, Israel’s actions have nothing to do with Hamas. Hamas isn’t the reason, it’s the excuse. The excuse to advance an agenda that Israel has been trying to advance for as long as it has existed as a modern state. This is what Israel’s supporters and defenders are really advocating. Not the elimination of Hamas, and certainly not Palestinian freedom. They’re advocating the end of the existence of Palestinians on Palestinian territory. No matter how much they try to sugarcoat it, that is their position. The word "genocide" requires a specific intent to destroy the Palestinian people in whole or in part as such. In other words, as we've seen from real genocides in history—the Holocaust, the Hutus against the Tutsis in Rwanda, the Armenian Genocide—you have a top-down architecture from the governing regime to destroy, eliminate from the face of the earth, the people in question. In the Holocaust there were 12 million Jews remaining after the six or seven years of the Holocaust. Before the Holocaust, there were 18 million Jews. That's 6 million Jews that were murdered in six or seven years. In Gaza, it's important to remember that the proponents of the genocide myth don't believe that there's only been one genocide since October 7th. They have claimed on five separate occasions that Israel has perpetrated five separate genocides against the Palestinians of Gaza to wipe them off the face of the earth since Israel withdrew in 2005. Some of these involved situations where Hamas attacked Israel, killed a few Jews. Israel did a reprisal. Maybe a few Palestinians were killed. That was called a genocide. But here's the number discrepancy. When Israel withdrew from Gaza in 2005, there were 1 million Palestinians there. Despite having five supposed separate genocides perpetrated against them in the 20 years since, I think most of the numbers from the CIA, the Israelis, and even the Gaza Health Ministry agree the population has more than doubled. There is over 2.2 million Gazans in the area today. Either Israel hasn't committed any genocide, or we're to believe that the country with F-35s, nuclear weapons, and one of the most sophisticated armies and air forces the world has ever known has been the most inept genocidal regime in the history of the planet.
