$200. That’s all it would take for the average consumer to save on their monthly payment for them to consider a Chinese car like BYD says Alan Haig. Average car buyers don’t care where their car was made if it pays for their groceries for the week. And China... show more

Would you buy a Chinese car to save $200/mth? (be honest)

While people might not care where the car is made, they still care big time about the reliability, durability and resale value of the car. In particular in the times of rising servicing costs. Chinese will have years to prove it imho.

Tariffs will adjust accordingly

It took Hyundai and Kia 30 years to go from a joke to a contender with Toyota and Honda. $200 won't make a big difference in my book if getting service and reliabity is a real pain.

What is $200 per month as a % of total payment on average these days? 20%? 30%? Not insignificant.

Did you watch those self-ignition videos of BYD?

nope. show me

‘I talked to dealers and consumers will buy these’ Or…maybe you talk to consumers and get their feedback? I’m a solid ICE guy who has a good friend who is a Tesla bro. He took me riding w FSD today. It’s cool from a tech perspective, but if you’re a regular everyday driver? It’s a long way off from being something you want. EVs in general - Tesla or not - aren’t going to significantly grow with general pop wo a very compelling reason to make the switch. 200/mo isn’t it. Bc I need a charger at my house, I can’t take the trips I take on weekends the same way and I have no idea who’s going to service these BYDs. You can argue all you want about EVs being better but they are perceived as harder to own. Inconvenient. If you were around for the Hyundai Elantra when it debuted - or the Daiwoo Leganza - that low end stuff sold and broke and in the case of Daiwoo it never recovered.

Rather be data mined by an American car company 🦅

If it's reliable and affordable they could make it on Mars for all I care. I'm buying it.
