What we see as an 'orb' is plasma being confined by a magnetic field. These are aneutronic fusion reactors. Aneutronic (radiation free) fusion prevents destruction of the reactor and the charged particles can be used for propulsion. The lines are dark because it's the exhaust from these reactors is xrays beyond the thermal spectrum. The reactors are small, consistent with a high beta concept with a radius of a couple meters.
