The top ranked team in the state, Defiance Baseball used a 6 run 5th inning to defeat #4 (D6) Fairview High School Baseball 9-4 in a tune up game for both teams before the tourney starts later this week. 8 of 9 hitters for the Bulldogs collected hits, and 7 of 9 hitters scored runs as Defiance used a balanced attack 1-9 in the lineup. Logan Hutcheson had three hits out of the leadoff spot while the 2-3 hole of Cohen Stockman-Brady Borton drove in 5 runs. Garyson Smiddy went the distance on the bump, striking out 9. Cardinals Player Spotlight - Ray Lankford Lankford was born on June 5, 1967, in Los Angeles, California. He played as an outfielder in Major League Baseball, primarily for the St. Louis Cardinals, from 1990 to 2004, with a brief stint with the San Diego Padres in 2001-2002. After a taste of the big leagues in 1990, Lankford would finished 3rd in voting for the National League's Rookie of the Year in 1991. Lankford was known for his combination of power and speed, hitting 238 home runs and stealing 258 bases over his career. He spent most of his career with the Cardinals, where he became a fan favorite. His best season was arguably 1998, when he hit .293 with 31 home runs and 105 RBIs. Lankford hit 123 home runs at Busch Stadium II, the most of any player in the stadium's history. He finished his career in his home ballpark with a pinch hit home run in his final major league at bat on October 3, 2004. He is the only player to have 200 home runs and 200 stolen bases as a Cardinal. After retiring, he has occasionally been involved in coaching and mentoring young players. If you need a 1-game capsule of the skills & talent of Alex Freeland, last night was a pretty good one to bookmark. Freeland played 3rd and showed his athletic ability & arm strength on making a play on a slow roller he had to come in on. He then showed his competitive nature & toughness catching a throwdown from Hunter Feduccia to nail a runner trying to steal 3rd. As for the offensive side Freeland hit a double to the opposite field gap on a very aggressive swing in a + count, then shortened up later in the game with 2 strikes and shot one the other way for a 2-strike, 2-out, 2-RBI base hit. Freeland is hitting .333, OPS is .909. He leads the PCL in hits with 31 and also in doubles with 12. He's top 5 among qualified players in the PCL in RBIs (25), and then is top ten in BBs (14), and Stolen Bases (6). #dodgers

The Raiders (29-0) have been building up to this season with 11 senior members of the roster making their 3rd consecutive Final Four appearance. They looked like the more complete team in the opening minutes by building a 20-14 cushion heading into the second quarter, but that's when Quinn Kwasniak began to take matters into his own hands. The Army commit put up 15 of his game-high 38 points in the frame, cashing in a pair of logo 3-pointers that fueled the Patriots (21-9) crowd and dazzled everyone else in attendance. For those that had the privilege to see the greatness of linebacker Derrick Thomas in person, they will remember the significance of what happened 37 years ago when the Alabama Football legend ensured the Crimson Tide would not lose in an 8-3 victory over Penn State on Oct. 22, 1988, inside Legion Field. Thomas terrorized Penn State’s Tony Sacca all afternoon and finished with three sacks, nine quarterback hurries, eight tackles and almost outscored the Nittany Lions by himself with a fourth-quarter safety. Led by the heroic performance, the Crimson Tide defense allowed just 21 yards in the second half. In the 1988 season, Thomas won the Butkas Award as the nation’s top linebacker and finished with a staggering 27 sacks. To put that in perspective, Alabama as a team had 25 sacks last season with one extra game. “We made some changes at halftime to free Derrick Thomas,” Alabama head coach Bill Curry said. “Once Derrick Thomas is flying around, all kinds of things happen. They start looking for him. It’s a real nightmare when there’s a player like that on the other team.” CBS televised the defensive slugfest and announcer Brent Musburger described Thomas’s afternoon as, “the most dominating performance I’ve ever seen by a college player.” Philip Doyle scored the only offensive points for Alabama with a 39-yard field goal in the second quarter, before giving the Crimson Tide a 6-3 lead with a 35-yard field goal in the third quarter. Thomas added his safety early in the fourth quarter and a late quarterback hurry ended Penn State’s final offensive series when Lee Ozmint intercepted Sacca. Penn State finished with just 169 yards of total offense (98 passing, 71 rushing) and eight first downs.

In Division III, Region 10 action, #6 University School Baseball took advantage of a handful of Defiance miscues and used a three-run 3rd inning to defeat #14 Defiance Baseball, 4-1, advancing to the Regional Final. 2026 Auburn Baseball commit Deacon Nelson is widely known for what he does at the plate, but it was his arm that stole the show on Thursday. The right-hander kept Defiance off balance throughout four strong innings, allowing just two hits and two walks while striking out two. 2028 RHP Miles Wolf slammed the door over the final two innings, striking out five and allowing just one hit in an impressive relief appearance. 2026 SS/3B James Bucci impacted the game on both sides of the ball for the Preppers. C Cole Messina (@GamecockBasebll) is going to be a fun follow this spring. After playing sparingly as a true Freshman in 2022, Messina had a strong summer in the Northwoods League and hit .294/.410/.483 with 10 2B, 5 HR, and 40 RBIs. Proceeded to have a stellar Sophomore campaign, hitting .307/.428/.615 with 18 2B, 17 HR, and 65 RBIs in 62 games. Was a First Team All-SEC selection and a Third Team All-American. Thick, ultra-physical build at 6' and 230-lbs. Stands nearly upright in the box with a slightly open front side. Somewhat high handset, starts with the head of his bat pointed almost straight down behind his back shoulder. Small stride, gets his swing going with a bit of a barrel tip and without much of a load. Bat speed is plus. Messina has a pull-oriented approach and an above average feel for the barrel. Bat-to-ball skills are advanced, and in '23 he sported an overall IZ contact rate of 90% (90% against FB, 92% against SL). Sound pitch recognition skills and doesn't really expand the zone. Would put a 55 on the hit tool. His natural strength and physicality allows him to generate high-quality impact on a regular basis. Max EV in '23 was 108. Overall raw power is a 55, but a 60 to the pull side. There are some defensive question marks, but Messina is a sneaky athlete behind the dish. Moves well laterally. However, his overall catching skillset will need to become more polished. Proud dad moment. This is my son Hudson's 3rd year playing baseball. He's a killer whenever he goes to bat. .600+ batting average. Never strikes out. His first two seasons, he was on a team where all four pitchers were the coaches sons. Needless to say, he never got to pitch. This season, he was on a different team. This team has one good pitcher, but that pitcher plays on two different teams. When he's not there to pitch, it's a disaster. Last game he wasn't there, Hudson's team lost 20-1. The other team got 3 hits... that's not a typo. All season, Hudson has been asking for a chance to pitch with the coach saying "maybe" every time. Fast forward to yesterday. Good pitcher is there. We're up 11-4. Good pitcher runs out of pitches with two outs remaining in the second to last inning. Coach puts his son in as pitcher. Son needs to get ONE out. It's a hot mess. He allows 4 runs on zero hits and by some miracle, the inning comes to an end. Coach doesn't have to look at me to know that you could boil an egg on my forehead in that moment. I'm steaming. Finally in the last inning he relents and puts Hudson on the mound. After waiting for three years, Hudson gets to pitch for the first time. 14 pitches. Strikeout. Ground out. Strikeout. Game over. Here's the final at bat.
