24-Hour Fire Comparisons | August 12, 2025 (Newfoundland & Labrador) All three major fires currently burning on the Island have shown growth in the past 24 hours, as noted by the Premier of NL earlier today. #nlwx Using NASA FIRMS imagery, we can see where this growth has been... concentrated. On the Paddy’s Pond fire, the most significant expansion has been on the north and south sides—especially to the north, closest to Paradise and Conception Bay South. This aligns with the evacuation order issued for the Three Island Pond area earlier today. The Kingston Fire shows growth along its northern flank, with more substantial spread toward the northeast into Ochre Pit Cove compared to yesterday. My heart goes out to all those who are waiting to find out if their homes, cabins, or whatever else they hold is still standing. Fire activity has increased exponentially on the north side of the #Widemouth2Fire. Based on a flyover, the fire is approximately 10,300 acres. The flareups that occurred earlier spotted over the north line and northeast line, closest to Turkey Track Lane and Cemetery Road. Fire is also pushing north to Highway 91. Everything south of 300 S is in GO evacuation status. The sheriff's office went door to door evacuating residents. Highway 133 is closed at the Kanosh city perimeter, except to residents. Highway 91 is closed to I-15. The fire has crossed Kanosh Canyon and established on the north side of the canyon. It's making a fast push northward, along the forest boundary. The IMT and sheriff are in discussions on further evacuations based on changing fire conditions. Fire behavior is extreme, with long distance spotting. This threat is real to the evacuated areas. We will have no weather reprieve, and the winds area predicted to continue from the south throughout the night. We will keep crews engaged with both aggressive fire suppression, as well as structure protection, throughout the night. More resources are on their way to assist, both ground and air support. The #Widemouth2Fire has been pushing north towards Fillmore, UT since last night. The fire is currently mapped at 36,438 acres, but has grown since then that mapping mission. With the predicted wind, the fire will likely continue to grow north and northeast. Strong winds are expected to remain active throughout the night. Crews remain fully engaged and are aggressively working to suppress the head of this fire. Fire managers are working continuously with the Sheriff on changing conditions and evacuation needs. On the perimeter east of Meadow, the fire continues to progress towards the ridge, but has not crested yet towards I-70. Crews are scouting around I-70 beyond that existing fire front, to make a strategic plan for future suppression activities. Due to the inaccessibility of the area, and changing wind conditions, no crews have been inserted yet on the eastern side. Crews continue to secure and hold the south and southwestern perimeter of the fire, south of Kanosh, UT. Thus far, these edges are holding with very little heat and growth. There are still some internal smokes with potential for spotting, so firefighters are working diligently to mop up well within the perimeter to avoid any slop overs or spotting. Residents are asked to stay close to their phones for evacuation changes. Any changes will be sent out on an alter to phones and homes within the perimeter of the evacuation zones. In a press conference minutes ago, authorities said the Aspen Acres Fire is now 7 miles from Wetmore, Colorado, and now a mandatory evacuation is in effect for the Wetmore area. From Pueblo county line, to Mackenzie Junction, to Fremont county to the North. For an idea of how far this fire has run, the original evacuation shelter was in Wetmore… People are NOT being allowed into the fire area. The plan to asses homes lost has been postponed today due to fire activity. This fire is likely well over 40,000 acres now. Sunday, April 19, 2026, 7:57 AM: The latest satellite imagery shows the 545 DM low axis has rapidly intensified over the very warm Pacific waters in the last 12 hours. The main storm energy has shifted southward by 200 miles in its trajectory. This gives a higher opportunity allowing for more impacts not just to Northern California but also Southern California by Tuesday afternoon and Tuesday night to get even more rainfall and yes elevated thunderstorm development is not out of the question for San Luis Obispo to Los Angeles counties. I'm watching this evolving weather situation closely in the next 24 - 36 hours. Also, due to the placement of the low pressure, this could give a real significant severe weather threat for the Sacramento Valley and the Bay Area Monday night through Tuesday afternoon so this also may become even more convective than it was just 24 hours ago. This also gives a higher than 50% probability of low-grade tornadoes in the San Joaquin Valley by Tuesday afternoon or at least storm cells that could produce significant hail as well. Due to the warming of the Pacific, this will become more common as more storms will continue to develop at a rapid pace and become more severe across North America. The Mithrandir Pack captured on camera 21 hours ago at 10 a.m. yesterday morning. We visited the camera and swapped the SD card just a few hours later...only a few hours behind the pack! Mithrandir, as you can see in this video, is comprised of the breeding male and female, and their 3 living pups. The Mithrandir Pack had 5 pups this spring (we tagged all 5 pups), meaning they have had a pretty high pup survival rate thus far. For perspective, the typical pack in our area raises ~1.3-1.4 pups to adulthood on average. One interesting thing to notice is the difference in body size of the pups. Specifically, one pup is much smaller than the others. We suspect this is because that pup is a female and the others are males (females are generally a fair bit smaller than males in our area). Either way, pretty neat to think we were only a few hours behind the pack.

The Red Rock Fire on the Salmon Challis National Forest in Idaho ran 12 miles last night, eating up 40,000 acres in just hours. #idfire #idwx #wildfire The fire is now over 50,000+ acres. A Complex Incident Management Team from the Southwest, SW Team 3, has been ordered. It also sounds like the Black Eagle fire was more active and a bridge providing access for fire resources may have been compromised by the large fire run. The Elk Fire in Wyoming made a major run last night as well, pushing many miles. The fire is now in view of Sheridan, Wyoming. The most destructive fire in LA county history is still raging, but the fire chief says she doesn’t have enough firefighters. Maybe it’s because she’s been laser-focused on DEI for the past few years. The Mayor Karen Bass has been out of the country this entire time. Just months ago, she cut funding from the fire department and before that, the department’s extra equipment was sent to Ukraine. Even worse — LA fire hydrants are dry. Los Angeles has had two years of record-rainfall, but the rain just washed right into the ocean. A decade ago, California voted to spend billions of dollars on water storage and reservoirs and today, Gavin Newsom hasn’t finished building a single one. Newsom also filed a lawsuit years ago to stop a Donald J. Trump memorandum to funnel more water from Northern California to Southern Carolina —saying it would kill the smelt. Saving the micro-fish is apparently more important than people and maybe that’s because it’s big business— if anything happens to the smelt, people lose a lot of money. And it gets worse — Newsom oversaw the largest dam removal project in U.S. history to give Native Americans some land back and for some salmon. These dams were a go-to source for firefighters to pull water from for fires. Newsom spends more money fighting homelessness than fighting fires… and both of them are out of control. The state has a drug problem, a homeless crisis, everything’s burning and there’s no water. California is run by public servants who can’t serve the public.

The City of Bulawayo’s Fire Brigade deployed eight fire engines , three water bowsers and three fire hydrants as it swiftly attended and contained a fire that had broken out at a building along Leopold Takawira Street between George Silundika Street and Fife Street. The first call for the incident was made at 13:15 hours by a Council employee from the City Hall with the first team arriving at 13:20 hours (5minutes) within the international standard of 10 minutes. The teams found the building engulfed an indication that the fire had been going on for sometime without any report. Investigations into the cause of the fire are ongoing, with preliminary findings pointing to poor housekeeping as close to 20 LP gas cylinders were found in the building, which is now accommodating students. The Fire Brigade encourages residents to promptly report fires using the emergency services numbers, as it was noted that there was a delay in reporting the incident. The City’s emergency services are also concerned over motorists who do not give way to their response teams and motorists are encouraged to give way to emergency response vehicles at all times. Additionally, residents are urged against causing veld fires, as the City is recording an increase in veld fires, with five different cases having been attended today.
