Chicago Bears: The Deep Ball Façade As a Chicago Bears truther, I gotta keep it 💯 There are many Bears fans posting “Amazing” out of the pocket deep ball highlights of Caleb Williams Obviously, we don’t see those kinds of throws everyday. It’s insane!! But deep ball playmaking isn’t new to Chicago. Nor is it the focal point of Ben Johnson’s offense. If the Bears are going to be great, we have to become more efficient from the pocket. Pass percentage must go up, time in pocket must come down. Living outside the pocket will hinder our ability to be efficient and to win a Super Bowl #1 Deep Ball was always there Justin Fields in 2023 had one of the most efficient deep balls in the league. Not only that, the majority of his deep balls came from the pocket which is what you want from your QB. As good as the Bears were as a whole last year, the deep ball was far more efficient in 2023. But living on the deep ball and living out the pocket comes with limitations. We have to focus on the fundamentals #2 Ben Johnson is the catalyst Similar to 2023, Bears offense in 2024 had explosive plays followed by inconsistent offense and inept situational football by the head coach Poor offensive line, poor offensive scheme, and inept head coach were the core issues. Conclusion: If we wanted a QB to scramble and throw deep balls, Justin Fields would still be a Chicago Bear What makes Caleb unique, is that he can be a hunter down the field but also has the upside to be a Drew Brees type of QB in the pocket. I rather see more clips of Caleb playing in rhythm and in the pocket , than deep bombs out the pocket. There will be struggles, but that’s ok. I much rather see our QB struggle making the right throws in OTAs than masking it with his gift as an out the pocket thrower.

Jedrick Wills didn’t move the needle much for me when the Bears signed him, but I’ve been impressed with what I’ve seen in camp. I’ve played with Jason Peters, Lane Johnson, Nate Solder and some other really talented tackles. Wills has uncommon power, bend and athleticism for a man his size. He hasn’t been perfect and you can tell he’s still shaking off some rust, but you can also see why he was a top-10 pick. The athletic traits are still there: ▪️ 5.05 40 ▪️ 35” vertical ▪️ 9’5” broad jump ▪️ 34.5” arms There’s a lot to work with. BTC has now wicked above the same resistance three times in five days, and that keeps weakening the level. I still think the most likely short-term move is a push toward the CME gap at $81,145, but I do not like the risk to reward for longs up here. If my bigger bearish thesis is right, this rally is setting up a much better short later, not a chase long now. That bigger picture still matters more to me. April has already done the heavy lifting, while the historical setup for May and June still points to deeper downside and much bigger volatility. If that pattern keeps tracking, BTC could still be setting up for a much harder drop over the next two months. ETH still looks weaker than BTC, BTC dominance keeps pressing higher, and TOTALES is holding up better than the smaller alt indexes. But TOTALE50 and TOTALE100 are both flashing more bearish reversal pressure underneath, so I still think altcoins are vulnerable even if some charts are bouncing for now. In TradFi, DXY and USDJPY both still look capable of pushing higher, ES finally cooled off after a strong streak, the VIX is trying to turn, and the Nikkei still looks strong but not invincible. On the watchlist, I am paying closest attention to XMR, XLM, CHZ, STRK, H, HYPE, TAO, XRP, RENDER, and SOL.

Stadium thoughts: The frustrating part is this has been years in the making. The Bears bought Arlington Park. They explored the lakefront. They went back to Arlington Heights. Indiana got involved. Everyone saw this coming, and Illinois still waited until the last second. This is like coming out of a timeout and taking a delay of game. You had time. You knew the situation. Dan Orlovsky said the Bears least proven WR room in the NFL bc last year they had nobody top 70 in catches or top 50 in yards. He said the group is gonna have to improve or the Bears offense isn’t gonna be what people expect it to be. I think Dan Orlovsky does a great job, but this is where the spreadsheet misses the football. Yes, the Bears WR room is young. Using raw career catches and yards to call it a weakness is shortsighted. Rome Odunze missed 5 games and still finished with 44 catches 661 yards and six TDs. Luther Burden missed 2 games but if you watched the Bears you know his production was the tale of two seasons. He went from 24.4 YPG in his first 7 games to 60.1 over his final 8 which is a 1,022-yard pace. He also finished 3rd in the league in yards per route run. And if we’re evaluating weapons leaving out Colston Loveland is unfair. From Week 9 on, he had 47 catches 597 yards and 6 TDs. Those 597 yards ranked 2nd among all TEs. He then added 193 yards in 2 playoff games. They might be inexperienced but they’re not lacking talent. I think the pass-catching group as a whole is a strength of this roster. #DaBears #Bears

I don't know what the landmark is here, but this just looks like a bad throw from Hurts. Smith is open to the sideline but has to spin around and track the ball over his inside shoulder. Hurt's deep ball was bad last week, and I discounted that due to the weather. But it wasn't on point in this game either. Even the deep catch Smith made later required a dramatic adjustment to the ball and a spectacular catch.
