🙏A tribute to Bobby Prince (1945 - 2026) Bobby Prince (full name: Robert Caskin Prince III) was an American video game composer and sound designer, best known for his iconic work with Apogee Software (later 3D Realms) and id Software in the 1990s. He created music and sound effects for many classic PC games, especially those published by Apogee or developed by id Software: id Software titles: Commander Keen, Wolfenstein 3D, Spear of Destiny, Doom, Doom II. Apogee/3D Realms titles: Duke Nukem II, Duke Nukem 3D, Blake Stone, Rise of the Triad. His Doom soundtrack is especially legendary. It blended heavy metal/hard rock influences (inspired by bands like Black Sabbath, Pantera, and Alice in Chains) with the technical limits of early PC audio. Tracks like "E1M1 (At Doom's Gate)" became hugely influential and were even added to the U.S. Library of Congress National Recording Registry in 2026. Play the video to listen to it once more. "Ein Schweinhund" — loosely "Pig Dog"; correct spelling: "Ein Schweinehund" with an extra "e". German pronunciation would differ then. "Nein" — most common word for English-speakers wanting to sound German. Love it! They still do it in movies to this day! "Eva, auf Wiedersehen" — Eva, goodbye. Not performed by native speakers; id developers like John Romero and Tom Hall mangled pronunciations, creating the iconic garbled, comical effect (e.g., "Schutzstaffel!" unrecognizable to Germans, which I can confirm). Bobby Prince (composer) and Scott Miller (Apogee founder, as Mecha-Hitler) contributed voices, too. This DIY approach fitted 1992 shareware constraints and added some extra charm, per Sandy Petersen (ex-id contractor). Some outrage in German press (and to a degree on government level, hilarious) led to the game's indexing (banning) over "Hitler" stuff; too much for the faint-hearted public, I guess. It made us want to play it even more - and we did, of course. This is truly a piece of gaming history from the golden era.
