For the first time, footage has been released showing the successful combat use of Ukrainian jet-powered interceptor drones against Russia’s jet-powered drone. The interceptors themselves are jet-powered and feature a delta-wing configuration. The footage shows a series of ground launches followed by the interception of a Russian Geran-5 jet-powered kamikaze drone. The Geran-5 has a reported cruising speed of around 450–600 km/h

A very interesting turn of events in the air war. Russian Geran jet drones have dramatically increased their speed, rendering previous interception systems ineffective. Former CEO of Google, Eric Schmidt and the Ukrainian military are now openly admitting that there is no ready-made solution to reliably close off Ukraine’s airspace. NATO’s air defence systems in Ukraine are operating continuously but are unable to cope with Russia’s new jet-powered drones. Kyiv’s allies are speaking ever more loudly about the catastrophic state of affairs. NATO simply has no defence against the Geran and that is by no means the only problem Kyiv is facing. #russia #ukraine #drone #drones #kyiv #geran

We won’t reveal the technical specifications, but there are hints in the video: pay attention to the drone’s speed (numbers in the bottom left), altitude (numbers in the center), and throttle percentage (values on the right). For the first time in history, Ukraine has begun building a joint plant with Denmark, on Danish territory, and it will produce components for our missiles and drones, weapons that are already proving highly effective. During this war, Ukraine has already reached the level where nearly 60 percent of the weapons in the hands of our warriors are Ukrainian-made – and they are strong weapons, many of them cutting-edge. Of course, there are goals we must still achieve, in particular the production in Ukraine and together with Ukraine different types of air defense systems. We must get there. Ukraine has already proven that in weapons production we are among the best in the world. I thank everyone who is developing Ukraine’s defense sector, designing new models of Ukrainian weapons, and driving the technological advancement of our country.

He stated that interceptions of Russian jet powered drones are minimal because of the increased speed and altitude of the drones. Ukraine relies heavily on anti-air gunners and interceptor drones to shoot down Russian Gerans. In previous years, the Russian Geran-2 drones (which were most prominent) were low flying and had a slow cruising speed. This made shooting them down with cheaper means easier. However, these new Russian jet powered Gerans fly too high and fast to be intercepted by anti-air gunners and interceptor drones. This forces Ukraine to have to utilize missile interceptors or fighter jets leading to more successful impacts. Eventually Ukraine will find a solution, but until they do Russia will keep hammering major cities across the country for months to come. For Ukraine's sake, I hope they find a solution before winter.
