This is cool. Russia has updated its tactics of long range drone usage, using the jet powered variants in small groups throughout the day to prolong air raid alerts, but jet powered interceptors may make that obsolete. Hope to see over 90% interception rate.

🚨🇺🇦🇷🇺 Ukraine is intercepting only about 60% of Russia’s new jet-powered Geran-4 and Geran-5 attack drones, compared with roughly 95% of the slower piston-powered Geran-2s, according to the Financial Times. The newer models are fast enough to blur the line between kamikaze drones and low-cost cruise missiles. Geran-4s can reportedly reach around 450–500 km/h with a 50 kg warhead and a range of roughly 600–700 km, while the larger Geran-5 can approach 550–600 km/h, carry around 90 kg and fly close to 1,000 km. The new drones also use electro-optical and thermal targeting, allowing them to identify specific targets during the terminal phase instead of relying only on pre-programmed coordinates. Unconfirmed reports suggest the latest versions may also process imagery onboard with AI-based algorithms, potentially helping them navigate and attack even under heavy GPS/GLONASS jamming. Geran-5 can reportedly be launched not only from ground systems but also from Su-25 aircraft. 🔥 The speed increase is the real headache for Ukraine. These drones are much harder for mobile air-defense teams and conventional interceptor drones to catch, forcing Kyiv to rely more heavily on fighter aircraft and other expensive defenses. Ukrainian companies are already developing specialized jet-powered interceptor drones in response. Russia’s production has apparently expanded so far that even Iran has asked Moscow for jet-powered Gerans for its own needs, a remarkable reversal from the early phase of the war when Russia was the side importing Shahed technology.

The seeker can detect targets at a range of 1+ km, costs around $4,000, and enables automated interception or UAV detection in conditions of poor visibility. The Archimedes 1A seeker could most likely also be used on jet-powered interceptor UAVs (such as Alexa Spatium), potentially allowing them to intercept jet-powered drones such as the Geran-3, Geran-4, and Geran-5. Automated guidance could help eliminate the problem of the operator having only a minimal reaction time.

The Ukrainian Ministry of Defense says Alexa Spatium’s primary targets are Russian Geran-3, Geran-4 and Geran-5 attack drones, as well as Shahed-131s. The high-speed platform can also engage reconnaissance UAVs, helicopters and other aerial targets. Beyond its interceptor role, the system was designed with the capability to engage selected ground and surface targets, giving it considerably greater mission flexibility than a dedicated anti-drone interceptor. Alexa Spatium represents another step in Ukraine’s rapidly evolving layered air-defense architecture. As Russia introduces faster jet-powered attack drones, Ukraine is responding with faster and more specialized interceptors rather than relying exclusively on scarce and expensive conventional surface-to-air missiles.
