Whistle Drill The Whistle Drill is a great drill that simulates the chaos that takes place during transition defense. Transition defense is basically a scramble situation. Players should not worry about finding "their man" during transition. They should be worried about taking away the lane and easy baskets, stopping the ball, and identifying where the shooters are located. The teams that... -Communicate -Anticipate -Hustle ....will be most successful in transition defense. The Whistle Drill requires players to do all 3 of these things and therefore is a perfect drill to prepare your teams to successfully navigate the chaos of transition defense. Below we have Coach Huber demonstrating the Whistle Drill.

One of our staple drills to teach .5 decision-making: 4-on-3. The defense starts by circling, the coach throws the ball in, and it’s live. We put 10 seconds on the shot clock to force quick decisions and game-speed execution. This drill teaches our players to: • Make .5 decisions • Keep the ball moving instead of sticking • Attack advantages • Fly around on defense with urgency and communication Simple setup. LB Search & Destroy Drill - The search and destroy drill is highly effective for linebackers when actions inside the box are cloudy or unclear. - Coaches can choose to have players either shuffle or use a crossover step to move from their starting point to the cone. - A primary emphasis of the drill is to ensure the linebacker keeps their shoulders, hips, and feet square once they reach the cone. - Linebackers must avoid crossing over their feet when making contact with the ball carrier. - The drill should be executed at a thud tempo during the teaching phase so both the linebacker and the ball carrier can feel the movement, with the ball carrier waiting to make a decision until the linebacker reaches the cone. - The drill is excellent for young linebackers to learn how to match the path of the running back and track where he is going, rather than just running blindly through gaps.
