The fastest intensification. 20 years ago today, 185 MPH Hurricane Wilma set all of these records as she became the MOST POWERFUL Atlantic cyclone in all of documented history. At peak intensity in the Caribbean Sea, Wilma’s 2.3 MILE-WIDE eye punched a pinhole void through the Earth’s atmosphere, reaching a sea-level pressure of 882 MBAR. This was a staggering 97 MBAR lower than Wilma’s pressure had been just 24 hours prior. Only Hurricane Patricia has had a more intense peak for a storm in the Western Hemisphere.
