A 6-year-old student intentionally shot a teacher inside an elementary school in Newport News, Virginia, leaving the educator with "life-threatening" injuries, police say. It needs to be said….the majority of problems that occur in schools start at home.

As a first grade teacher, concerns about students' behaviors need to be taken seriously!

Arrest the parents! We need to begin to crack down on poor parenting, that’s where 95% of behavior starts.

The freedom to purchase firearms without strict limits on who is allowed to own them did not start at home. Sorry, but plenty of other countries have bad home lives for students and teachers aren't being shot. Simple solution. It's not easy to own a guns.

I have said this FOREVER! I worked in the front office of a middle school and I couldn’t believe what parents said, expected from everyone in the school. I often questioned how these parents were able to get themselves dressed:)!

DISCIPLINE when teachers pass it on to administrators. We are loving kids to failure & putting teachers and everyone else at risk.

Yes, home. Clinical studies indicate that by age 3, most of the personality has already been developed. By age 5 is pretty much set. It's not the school, not the teacher, not the gun, it's those first 5 years of life.

Ppl in this area have had guns forever. Now, in the last 17 months, we have experienced 3 shootings on school grounds. This is getting ridiculous and I'm worried each time I go to work. Two shootings last yr at high schools, now this.

It’s not the gun…it’s US!We’ve created this..it’s a lack of responsibility on the parents side…all our sides..kids see everything now..not developmentally prepared for what they have access too (just watch 10 min. of any media) and all we say is “turn the channel.”

So we are going to hold the parents responsible right? And provide long term serious counseling to that young child??

Yes they do….what ethnicity was the child? Pretty sure if it was a black teacher and white child that would be front and center on all media outlets!

Products of their environment. That means we have to create a great environment to counter poor environments. Love, Empathy, and Humility need to be on display for these little ones.

All teachers need to stay home until real changes are made. It's ridiculous that things like this KEEP HAPPENING! 😡🤬

My first thought is not what is happening at home, it is what would cause a 6 year old to shoot anyone especially if it is someone they would generally trust.

Where did he get the gun? The parents should be charged with reckless endangerment & more. They can say they didn't know he had the gun, but it should have been locked up. And if a 6 year old knows how to shoot a gun. . .more reason they're responsible. Someone had to teach him!

They started by trying to blame the teacher though as usual. “An altercation between” turned out to be false bs thrown out there.

As a Kdg teacher of the “tough kids”, I was injured almost daily & had to protect the other kids. One troubled boy threatened my life - he put me in a brace and having PT. I’d begged for him to be in a small group. His parents & the laws were issues.

Yes- parents need to parent - so easy to say - but the NRA has too much power and creating an insidious plague of terror in our country! Schools are in a catch-22 with potential lawsuits looming for taking the wrong step. Spend the $ for medal detectors!

Back in the day, my mom, an elementary school teacher, would go to kid’s homes and talk to their parents. Of course this was all in walking distance.
