We’re in Day 36 of the government shutdown and ICE has said they are not taking visits from Members of Congress. Oversight of American taxpayer-funded detention centers is a core part of our job—especially as the Trump admin has wiped out accountability mechanisms and is pumping billions into ICE. So I went anyway. My constituent, Yari, is sick with leukemia and we are not getting answers. After some insisting, I was let in and I was with her for two hours. Full recap soon.

Over 80% of these deaths are preventable. This is a moral obscenity and is an especially urgent moment for Black mothers. If we truly love our country, our children, and our families, this must be a unifying call. Mothers are dying every day. We can—and must—do better.
