A common hitting flaw that is rarely corrected and can exposes certain hitters at higher levels, is “leaking” … the player’s front side is “running away” from contact prematurely. Sometimes also called “spinning off” the ball. This means energy is escaping the swing because of a chain of events... that usually begins with the incorrect action of the stride foot. Correctly engaging the stride foot into the ground, called “foot-plant,” allows the body to efficiently sequence. As a result, the swing is shorter and barrel stays in the hitting zone longer. The BIG key is we have to be able to control our front knee before starting to swing. If a hitter can control their front knee and their front side a hair longer, stay behind contact, and attack the inside of the ball, it creates more whip.…(bat speed) and improves plate coverage. You might need to watch the video a couple times, because there are various ways to stride that allow the hitter to control their front knee. It is not a one size fits all action. And hitters who have sick power and want to pull the ball intentionally might actually “leak and clear” on purpose. But players who like to stay to middle of the field, might want to see what the initial movement into foot plant looks like. **** Remember, what happens to the front foot (stride foot) AFTER contact has little consequence. How to set up the tee for a pitch down the middle, inside & outside. I see far too many athletes setting up incorrectly when doing tee work at my clinics and I see it from all ages. I can’t stress enough how important it is to have the tee in the correct spot. You can have the best swing in the world but if your contact point is off, it does you no good. For a pitch down the middle, you’ll want to make contact with the ball about even with your front foot in order to stay connected and hit for maximum power. Inside will be right outside of front foot and outside will be right inside of front foot. Letting the ball travel too deep will jam you and catching too far out front will force you to hit the ball off the end of the bat and roll over. So for those wanting to change swing mechanics so quickly for mishitting the ball, check your contact points first.

Foot position at contact is always important, but many don’t realize how extending your toe forward and rotating the top of the foot to face up will actually allow your hips to clear more efficiently. Try not to swing your foot through the ball like a putter. Think of it more like a full golf swing.

Fernando Tatis Jr is hitting .242 with a 3.5° average launch angle and a career-low 20% pull rate. Everyone has ideas and analysis on how to fix Fernando Tatis Jr’s swing. It’s pretty awful and I can’t take anymore of this, I have to say something because I haven’t seen a single person give the right answer. I’ve seen multiple people talk about timing mechanisms like toe tap, stride, and leg lift in his swing mechanics that have absolutely nothing to do with his problem. That reverting to past timing mechanisms would somehow help him. THEY ARE ALL WRONG Because they’re all looking in the wrong place. This isn’t a stride problem or timing problem. It’s a tilt problem. Stride, leg lift, and toe tap are timing mechanisms. They control WHEN the hips fire not HOW the bat moves through the zone. A hitter with a Sosa leg kick and a no-stride Ichiro stance can produce identical launch angles.Timing has no lever that touches the bat at contact. What actually sets launch angle is attack angle or the vertical direction the bat is traveling at the moment it meets the ball. Swing up through the zone = ball lifts Swing flat = grounders Swing down = choppers Attack angle is the only mechanical input that matters for elevation and attack angle isn’t random. It’s a direct output of shoulder tilt. When the trail shoulder drops below the lead shoulder at contact, the entire swing axis tilts. The bat is now forced to travel upward through the zone. More tilt > steeper attack angle > higher launch angle. Period. Hip rotation is one of the primary drivers of velocity during the throw. Both speed and timing of rotation matter. The goal is to have the hips rotate out in front of the torso. Ideally, you want rotation to begin quickly after the front foot strikes the ground. The speed of rotation is also critical. I strive for all QBs that I work with to be 800+ deg/sec with hip rotation speed. One key thing is to not mistake “sliding” for rotating. Many will push and slide their hips forward as opposed to rotating against a stable lead leg.

The throw starts in the ground. The feet create force. The stride organizes direction. The hips carry energy. The shoulders store and release torque. The difference in the way Drew threw in HS/college and what we saw in the videos from the Steelers rookie camp is extremely subtle (basically a slight adjustment w/ the front leg and zero change to his upper half or arm path/slot) and most wouldn’t be able to pick up on it. I disagree that he was early with his external rotation during college. The video below (from 2024) shows his typical approach over the past 7 years…staying loaded and coiled on the back leg until the front foot makes contact with the ground. The difference in the way Drew threw in HS/college and what we saw in the videos from the Steelers rookie camp is extremely subtle (basically a slight adjustment w/ the front leg and zero change to his upper half or arm path/slot) and most wouldn’t be able to pick up on it. ⚽ Day 42 of building my football/soccer game solo in Unreal Engine 5. Tonight, I rebuilt how the ball and the player's feet actually talk to each other while remaining separate meshes. I wanted to get pretty technical with y'all on a Saturday, so enjoy the read if you enjoy this stuff. Otherwise, just watch the video 👍 - Normal dribbling is impulse-based now. The foot arrives, knocks the ball on, the ball is genuinely loose between touches. Stop running and the ball keeps going without you. - We enabled Motion Warping on all 10 turn animations so the montages will now bend the player's path mid-turn so the boot arrives at the ball, instead of the ball being dragged to wherever the animator drew it previously. - Every contact is authored on the animation itself. I track which frame, which foot, which part of the boot, and whether it CARRIES the ball (sole on a drag-back) or STRIKES it (inside-of-the-foot on a 90) - Each contact declares how close the player needs to be. A sole on top of the ball, an inside-foot redirect and an outside-foot push all reach differently — 75 / 63 / 53 units - Touches are credited only to the foot the animation is actually dribbling with - Sideways and forward correction are capped separately. Pushing the ball across your line keeps it. Pushing it forward is how you lose it - Touch strength scales with your speed. The ball has to leave the foot ~1.27× faster than you're running just to stay ahead. This was an annoying bug I kept running into where I overran the ball and left it behind.
