It is basically a data center that floats in space and runs on sunlight instead of the power grid. Musk says its peak power is going up to ~250 kW, from 150 kW. Its average power is going up to 160 kW, from 120 kW. Why the boost. A single Nvidia Rubin NVL72 rack, 72 of Nvidia's newest AI chips, needs that much power to run. The bigger number means one AI1 can now handle a full rack. Musk's reasoning is simple. A GPU running all day uses about two-thirds of its peak power, even when it is very efficient.
