A dash of gratitude, on this special day! #HappyThanksgiving (Revisiting a favourite – babies Lenny and Sulwe are a bit bigger now, but just as speedy! They don’t get milk bottles, as they nurse from their mothers, but like to race alongside the ever-competitive Lima Lima all the same.)...

At only 3-months old, baby Lenny is still finding his feet in the world, but every time he does, watch out! In between catnaps and nursing from his mum — rescued orphan Lima Lima — Lenny can be found motoring around the Kibwezi Forest as fast as his little legs can carry him! This time, straight for the Keeper and his camera! Lenny is one of 71 babies known to have been mothered by orphaned elephants we have rescued, raised, and rewilded. A generation of elephant made possible through our Orphans' Project and your support! Enjoy more of Lenny, and his pseudo sister Sulwe, at:

Our Umani grandbabies aren't bottle-fed – they get all the nutrition they need by nursing from their mothers – but they still love joining the dependent herd's midday milk race! Ears flapping, trunks wagging, desperately trying to trip each other up, watch Lenny, Sulwe, and Mwana race across. Lenny, who shares his mother Lima Lima's speed and competitive spirit, usually emerges victorious. The amusing twist? As soon as they reach the 'finish line,' they lose all interest in the bottles and meander over to the mud bath whilst the orphans have their milk. It's the race itself that thrills them, not the prize! Your donations and adoptions help ensure these kindergartners can roam carefree. Support us: #MilkBottleMoments

Mwana deserves an award for auntie of the year! Little Lenny delivered a serious head butt, then realised the error in his ways as nannies Kiasa, Sonje, and even baby Sulwe thundered over. Lenny is a precocious chap, but he is also learning that bad manners won’t be tolerated amongst his family! Our Umani elephant family is remarkable. Mwana, Lenny and Sulwe are all SWT ‘grandkids’ — wild calves born to orphans we rescued, raised, and reintegrated back into the wild. Meanwhile, Kiasa and Sonje are orphans rescued and raised in our care. They are elephants of two worlds: living wild as they choose, but also fiercely devoted to their human-orphan family. Learn more about Umani Spring, our place of miracles:

We are in pursuit of a more perfect world. While we provide a family and a wild future to Kenya’s orphaned elephants, our ultimate goal is to keep wild families together and pave the way for generations to come. Each of these babies is alive today because an orphan’s life was saved many years ago. Their mothers grew up in our care before reclaiming their rightful place among Kenya’s wild elephants. Now, they are nurturing the next generation. To learn more about our world-renowned Orphans’ Project and the conservation work your support makes possible, visit:

Lenny is fast out of the blocks when he realises the herd is heading for its midday milk feed. Funny thing is, he doesn’t need or get a bottle: Unlike the rescued orphans in Umani, Lenny has his mum by his side — wild-living orphan Lima Lima — and with that, access to milk ‘on demand’! Baby Zigi, the youngest elephant calf — born to Zongoloni — brings up the rear. Only a month old, he’s doing a great job in trying to keep up with his older ‘brother’ Lenny. They are two of 76 calves born to orphaned elephants we’ve rescued, raised, and rewilded. A next generation of elephants alive today thanks to a life saved many years ago. To our supporters, who make our work a reality, we thank you. If you would like to be part of our conservation mission, visit:

Meet Sulwe. You met her mum, Sonje, earlier this week. Sulwe was born wild on Christmas morning 2024, in the Kibwezi Forest just outside our Umani Springs Reintegration Unit. Sonje was once one of our most seriously wounded rescues – she arrived in 2012, nine months old, with a fractured leg – a victim of the poaching crisis. Thirteen years later, Sonje is wild, and Sulwe is the proof. She turned one in December. Earlier this year she tried to pull the tail of another wild-born calf, found out he was stronger than she expected, and ran back to her mother. Human or elephant, the kids all have to learn how to get along, it seems. Every calf like Sulwe is a bright light of hope for elephants. Meet some of the others, alive today because years ago we rescued their orphaned mothers:

Lenny is not yet two but he's already been given the honour of leading the herd. Previously, that was a role earned by his mother, orphan Lima Lima, who became known as the scout of our Umani herd of orphans. Trunk high in the air, she'd intercept the scent of any wild animals in the forest, and then raise the alarm if she felt they posed a threat to her orphan-human family. Today, she leads a herd of ex-orphans and their babies, including her own – little Lenny – in the wild. Fittingly, his name means 'brave as a lion', perfect for the son of such a courageous elephant. Discover Lenny's birth story:

It's been a week of romantic intrigue at Umani Springs. Predictably, Lima Lima was at the heart of it — she was in season, but she has also always enjoyed the attention of bulls! The team kept well out of the way, but managed to watch all the drama unfold. As Head Keeper Philip reported: "Since last week, Lima Lima has been attracting many wild bulls eager to win her affection. Today eight bulls arrived, each hoping to be the one she would choose. The competition quickly turned into conflict. The bulls refused to back down and fierce battle broke out as rivals fought for the chance to be with Lima Lima. In one dramatic clash, a determined bull forced his strongest competitor, and the fight ended with one of them breaking a tusk. Love in the wild can be beautiful, but it can also come at a heavy cost. Today one bull paid that price, losing a tusk while fighting for his sweetheart Lima Lima.’ Once dominance was established, all was well and Lima Lima headed back to the herd and calm was restored. Lima Lima is an orphan rescued and raised through our Orphans’ Project, and now living wild. She is a mother of one — though it looks like another sibling may be on the horizon! Revisit her story:

The boisterous baby bulls are brimming with bravado! Little Zigi is like a coiled spring this morning, filled with so much energy he doesn’t know where to direct it. After games with Lenny, he breaks rank and looks to engage one of the Keepers. After styling out a double knee drop, which didn’t see the Keeper move an inch, he turns on his heels ready to reengage with Lenny. Both calves are here today thanks to lives saved many years ago, in this case, Zongoloni and Lima Lima. In rescuing, raising, and rewilding orphaned elephants, we are supporting individuals and the entire species. Your support makes this a reality 🙏

Lenny and Sulwe must feel so cool right about now! Ex-orphan Ziwa, who has been living wild for many years now, popped by to visit our Umani herd. The 14-year-old bull has real gravitas, but Lenny and Sulwe were unfazed. The little babies toddled over to join him in the mud and tried their very best to impress, before beating a hasty exit. We'll let you decide how that went.

Each of these babies are only alive today because we stepped into rescue and raise their mothers after they were orphaned. Today, these rescued elephants are living wild and raising confident, playful babies. With 80 known wild-born calves, our elephant family tree is expanding. Get to know the tiny trunks in our midst:

The Umani herd of orphaned elephants is a true team. Take it’s leaders. It’s natural matriarchs are Murera & Sonje, but because of injuries gained before their rescue, they lead from behind. To ensure the family doesn’t walk into danger, Lima Lima (R) has taken on the role of scout, warning the group of any hidden wildlife or approaching elephant herds. Rounding out the leadership team is Quanza (Centre), an able deputy who ensures the herd stays together! Meet this extraordinary family of elephants:

Little Zigi is a man in a mission. What’s the rush – catching up with mum for a drink! Just like us, mother-child relationships vary by elephants. For instance, Lima Lima is loving but quite laidback with her son, Lenny. She gives him (and herself!) a long leash. Zongoloni takes a very different approach. She is hawkishly protective of Zigi and he, in turn, is like her little shadow. We can understand why Zongoloni keeps her family close: Rescued in 2013, she stands out as one of our most heartbreaking orphan cases. Her mother was shot by poachers and then left to an agonising, drawn-out demise. Zongoloni was just a baby at the time, yet she stayed by her mother’s side until the very end. Having witnessed the very worst of mankind, it took a long time for Zongoloni to trust us. Over the years, however, she learned to love again – a love she now passes on to her son. Learn more about this remarkable elephant mum and her adorable son:
