A solar eclipse occurs when the Moon moves directly between Earth and the Sun, aligning so precisely that it blocks the Sun’s light. Iceland and northern Spain are among the best spots, with totality lasting around 2 minutes. Spain gets an especially wild view because the eclipse happens right before sunset, turning the sun into a thin crescent as it drops below the horizon. Much of the rest of Europe, Canada, the northern U.S. and northwestern Africa will still get a partial eclipse. Yesterday, I was so impressed by Ben Cooper’s photograph capturing the different stages of the solar eclipse in a single image that I immediately started adding the same idea to my eclipse project. Now it’s tested and ready. You can choose any point on Earth and any solar eclipse from the past 4,000 years or the next 1,000 and see how the Sun moved across the sky during the eclipse.

Blue Ghost turns red! Our lander downlinked more imagery from the Moon captured around 2:30 am CDT during the totality of the solar eclipse last night. These images - rapidly captured by our top deck camera with different exposure settings - were stitched together in a quick clip. The red hue is the result of sunlight refracting through the Earth's atmosphere as the sun is blocked by our planet, casting a shadow on the lunar surface. The glowing ring of the eclipse is again seen on Blue Ghost’s solar panel. #BGM1

The total lunar eclipse started at 23:28 on Sunday evening and conclude at 04:55 on Monday morning, Beijing time. The totality phase, known as the "red moon," will last from 01:31 to 02:53, with a duration of one hour and 22 minutes. "A lunar eclipse is rare. It occurs when the earth moves right in the middle of the moon and the sun, blocking the sunlight from shining on the moon. The total lunar eclipse this time will last for a relatively long time as it will enter the earth's shadow quite deeply. " said by an expert at Beijing Planetarium. This eclipse can be observed with the naked eye under good weather conditions.
