#WATCH | Coimbatore | A male wild elephant known as Rolex had been frequently coming out of the forest in the Thondamuthur forest area and causing crop damage and loss of life. The elephant was constantly monitored as it emerged from the forest every night. In this situation, the elephant was anaesthetised at around 2 am on October 17 and was brought under control. It was loaded into a lorry by three Kumkis (Kapildev, Wasim and Bomman) and taken to the Varakaliyar, Elephant camp. (Visuals: Forest Department)

From despair to hope and from struggle to triumph, this is the incredible story of a wild elephant mother's fight for survival backed by a dedicated and professional team of foresters and vets from Coimbatore in Tamil Nadu Forest Department .The mother elephant was found sick and lying on ground with her 3 months old baby roaming around her in confusion and distress.The team consulted experts and vets and successfully lifted her with the help of a crane. She was kept supported by the crane for three days while being treated by Vets. Her baby joined the herd and other siblings roaming in the nearby forests visiting the mother in the night. Thanks to the treatment,she gained enough strength and was released to freedom in the wild today. We are monitoring her to keep an eye on her well being. Kumki elephants deployed to tackle human-elephant conflict To mitigate frequent human-elephant conflicts in Chittoor and Manyam Parvathipuram districts and to protect both human lives and farmers’ crops, the Government of Andhra Pradesh, with the support of the Government of Karnataka, brought trained Kumki elephants to the state in May. After completing Andhra Pradesh mahouts at the camp set up near Palamaneru, these Kumki elephants have now been successfully deployed to drive away wild elephants entering the Palamaneru forest division. This marks the beginning of a crucial operation aimed at safeguarding nearby villages and agricultural lands. Tourists on a safari narrowly escaped a wild elephant near the Bhadra right-bank canal, close to #Lakkavalli in #Tarikere taluk on Friday. The tourists were travelling in a jeep belonging to Jungle Lodges and Resorts for a safari. At that moment, near the Bhadra Ranganatha Swamy temple, a wild elephant chased the jeep. As they were about to be attacked by a wild elephant, the driver quickly reversed the jeep, displaying presence of mind. Due to the driver’s quick response, the tourists narrowly escaped the elephant’s attack. A video of the elephant chasing the jeep was captured on the tourists’ camera and has gone viral on social media.

In a meticulously planned operation, the Tamil Nadu Forest Department relocated a wild tusker from O’Valley in the Gudalur region of the Nilgiris, a hotspot of recurring human elephant conflict. After weeks of monitoring and rehabilitation, the elephant was translocated somewhere in the Kalakad Mundanthurai Tiger Reserve, a pristine habitat ideal for elephants. An incident of Tamil Nadu-based bikers trespassing into the safari route at Bandipur National Park was reported yesterday. The biker, along with a pillion rider, was seen travelling on his motorcycle on the safari route located 3 kms from Bandipur old campus at about 4.50 pm. With tigers and other wild animals being sighted at the tiger reserve, the bikers have neglected the safety norms by straying into the forest. On witnessing the bikers entering the restricted forest area, a few of the Mysuru-based tourists warned them not to enter the forest. However, not yielding to the warning, they continued their jolly ride about 2 kms into the forest and returned on the same route. The video of which was captured by some tourists. Meanwhile, by the time the forest guards could arrive, the duo had fled the spot through the Kekkanahalla check post and Mudumalai Tiger Reserve in Tamil Nadu. The Forest officials, who have noted down the motorcycle registration number, have passed it on to the Mudumalai forest officials and Tamil Nadu Police. Bandipur Tiger Reserve Director L. Nandish has also instructed the officials to identify the miscreants and initiate necessary action.

Our hearts are melting with joy to see the Elephant mother raising her trunk to thank our foresters after they rescued and united a very young baby elephant with the mother. The baby had slipped and fallen into a canal in Pollachi in Coimbatore District in Tamil Nadu. The Mother tried hard to rescue the baby but the young one was unable to come out due to strong water flow. What better tribute to elephants on the #WorldElephantDay than guaranteeing their right to a safe life. Since November 2023, this system has ensured zero elephant deaths on the tracks. With rising human intrusion, wild elephants from the forest started entering nearby villages, triggering widespread panic. Now, nearly 1,100 encroaching families have been evicted by the administration. The Forest Department plans to restore the cleared land by planting bamboo.

A woman tourist from Chennai was trampled to death by Dasara elephant Kanjan at the Dubare Elephant Camp in Kodagu district this morning. The deceased has been identified as Juneshe (33), a homemaker from Chennai, who had come to Dubare with her family as part of a trip to Kodagu. Her husband, a software engineer based in Chennai, and their child were also part of the trip.
