Kumki elephants deployed to tackle human-elephant conflict To mitigate frequent human-elephant conflicts in Chittoor and Manyam Parvathipuram districts and to protect both human lives and farmers’ crops, the Government of Andhra Pradesh, with the support of the Government of Karnataka, brought trained Kumki elephants to the state in May.... After completing Andhra Pradesh mahouts at the camp set up near Palamaneru, these Kumki elephants have now been successfully deployed to drive away wild elephants entering the Palamaneru forest division. On the occasion of Vinayaka Chavithi, I visited the Gutchimi Elephant Holding Area in Parvathipuram Manyam District and appreciated the Forest Department’s ongoing elephant conservation efforts and measures being taken to mitigate human–elephant conflict under the leadership of Honourable Deputy CM Pawan Kalyan garu. In a meticulously planned operation, the Tamil Nadu Forest Department relocated a wild tusker from O’Valley in the Gudalur region of the Nilgiris, a hotspot of recurring human elephant conflict.
