Today marks a historic milestone in the perpetual ethos of cooperation and unity between the esteemed states of Bharat, Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka. I am immensely grateful for the gracious gesture of Karnataka Government, in handing over the Kumki elephants to Andhra Pradesh at the prestigious Vidhana Soudha. This is not just an administrative formality, but a testament of cooperative federalism. These trained Kumki elephants play a crucial role in mitigating the loss of human lives and crop damage caused by wild elephant attacks resulting from human-wildlife conflict in Andhra Pradesh. What makes this even more special is the spirit in which it was done. The moment our state raised the proposal, the response from the Karnataka Government was swift, respectful, and above politics. Yesterday, I have visited the Kumki Elephant Training Camp at Musalamadugu, Palamaneru and was delighted to see the excellent care and training being given to the elephants. With the help of these Kumkis, we have successfully carried out two operations, bringing great relief and happiness to the local communities. We are taking special care of the Kumkis — just as they were lovingly cared for in Karnataka. Our forest teams are continuously monitoring their health, conducting regular check-ups, and providing every necessary care and comfort. This collaboration between Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka reflects our shared commitment to wildlife protection and compassionate coexistence. We are deeply thankful to the Government and people of Karnataka for their invaluable support in providing these Kumki elephants to Andhra Pradesh. Our special thanks to Ms. Meenakshi Negi, IFS, Principal Chief Conservator of Forests & HoFF, and Sri Subhash Malkhede, Chief Wildlife Warden, Karnataka, for their guidance and cooperation in this effort. From Kumkis to AI: Andhra Pradesh Leads the Way in Human–Wildlife Coexistence To address the rising Man–Animal Conflict, especially wild elephant intrusions near forest villages, the Government of Andhra Pradesh has launched an AI-based solar-powered detection and deterrence system in Chittoor Division, under the leadership of Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan. Earlier, with the support of the Karnataka Government, 4 Kumki elephants were brought to Andhra Pradesh and successfully assisted in multiple operations to safely guide wild elephants back to their forest habitats. Karnataka is set to gift six elephants to Andhra on 21st May Ranjan, Deva, Masthi, Karuna are being sent from Dubare elephant camp in Kodagu district. Krishna and Abhimanyu (photos attached) are being sent from Sakrebailu elephant camp in Shimoga district. Krishna and Abhimanyu had been sent along with their mahouts and kavadis to help in weaning an elephant calf from its mother in Dandeli, Kali Tiger Reserve. While the mahouts and kavadis returned to Shimoga, Krishna and Abhimanyu were kept in captivity in Dandeli. It is a practice that the mahouts and kavadis keep the trained elephants under their supervision and care. But in the case of Krishna and Abhimanyu the mahouts were suspiciously packed off. The six lovely gifts from Karnataka are to be taken to Chitoor to augment the stock of captive elephants. The elephants are being "gifted' to help mitigate human-elephant conflicts in Andhra. Ironically, Karnataka has most incidents of man-animal conflicts. People, especially farmers and farm hands are being trampled frequently in Hassan, Kodagu, Chamarajnagar & Mysuru. Consequently, elephants are being captured frequently to replenish the stock in Karnataka's elephant camps. It is condemnable that the elephants which were sent from Sakrebailu to help wean a calf are being sent to Andhra, instead of them being returned to their established, familiar environment.

At Muthanga Wildlife Sanctuary I met Dr.Arun Zacharia, an accomplished veterinary surgeon who is also a font of knowledge regarding wild animals, the forest and related issues. His experience and that of the forest officials is key to understanding and managing the animal-man conflict in the area. Part of this effort is the training and use of Kumki elephants that drive away rogue wild elephants when they stray into human habitations. Man- animal conflict in Wayanad is a complex problem for which all of us have to collaborate and find workable solutions.

When you join team Mudumalai Tiger Reserve on the concluding day of the Synchronised elephant population estimation in TN and actually get to record the sighting of a majestic tusker 😊.The three day elephant estimation involved 697 blocks in 26 Forest Divisions. Today teams recorded elephant sightings at water holes. Its breakfast time at the Kozhikamudi elephant camp where 26 elephants are cared for by the Tamil Nadu Forest Department. Each elephant has a set menu designed by expert camp veterinarian based on the weight and age of the elephant. The diet invariably consists of ragi, rice, sugarcane, coconut and minerals. In a meticulously planned operation, the Tamil Nadu Forest Department relocated a wild tusker from O’Valley in the Gudalur region of the Nilgiris, a hotspot of recurring human elephant conflict. After weeks of monitoring and rehabilitation, the elephant was translocated somewhere in the Kalakad Mundanthurai Tiger Reserve, a pristine habitat ideal for elephants. Led by the Chief Wildlife Warden along with Conservators, DFOs, veterinarians, ground staff and trained kumkis, the operation showcased precision, coordination across divisions, patience and professionalism. It ensured both human safety and wildlife conservation.
