A fast moving coronal mass ejection (CME) means the northern lights may be visible overnight, and perhaps on Tuesday night too The arrival time of the CME is uncertain, but aurora sightings are possible in northern Britain and perhaps in southern areas depending on cloud cover.

CAN YOU SEE THEM? An exciting next few nights await as the potential for a significant northern lights display is on the table. NOAA's forecast calls for Strong (G3) storming tonight with the potential for Severe (G4) storming tomorrow. Many of you have inquired about the cloud cover forecast. I've plotted the latest high resolution cloud cover data below, synced with best-case aurora viewing possibilities based on NOAA's forecast. Remember, it's very difficult to precisely predict the timing and magnitude of northern lights. These view lines are to be used as a general guide of potential. Areas in red will experience overcast skies and poor viewing, regardless of what the northern lights are doing. Those in green will have relatively clear skies. Hope this helps!

Here’s your space weather report for the week of May 15 - 21: • 4 M-class flares • 3 C-class flares • 35 coronal mass ejections • 1 geomagnetic storm This video from NASA’s Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO) shows the week’s activity. It was a fairly calm week on the Sun. A coronal mass ejection last week reached Earth on May 15, triggering a minor geomagnetic storm and leading to aurora sightings across the northern U.S. On May 20, SDO's Helioseismic and Magnetic Imager (HMI) paused normal science operations for a series of routine calibration maneuvers — measurements that keep the instrument's magnetic field and Doppler velocity data scientifically accurate. You can see these maneuvers starting at about 2:29 in the video. Learn more about space weather:

Rain is on the way for parts of the UK after the driest July in England and Wales since records began, but some of southern England may still not see a drop. Outbreaks of rain and showers are forecast on Tuesday in Northern Ireland, Scotland, western England and Wales – but the Met Office has forecast a dry day for much of the Midlands, the east and southeast of England. July was southern England’s driest month ever recorded, with the whole of Wales and half of England plunged into drought.
