Today #Iran's regime's supreme leader gave public remarks where he labeled President Trump a "criminal" and blamed him for the protests--which is classic Khamenei as it's always a conspiracy and externalizes events to deflect blame--where he admitted "several thousands" were killed. Khamenei also signaled that “The Iranian nation will not let go of the domestic and international criminals behind this unrest." This shows that the regime will not stop the killings in the long-run and Western nations should be prepared for renewed Islamic Republic extraterritorial terror plotting abroad to silence its critics. But Khamenei should be careful with his words. Only a few days before President Trump took out Qassem Soleimani in 2020, Khamenei taunted him saying he couldn't do anything and also accused him of "crimes." Days later, Soleimani was dead.

Today #Iran's regime's supreme leader released a pre-recorded message for the anniversary of the Islamic Revolution, a day after he wasn't present for the anniversary of the Homafaran Allegiance, which was the first time in 37 years he had not participated in a public commemoration for it. This video is a little unusual in terms of televised Khamenei messages as traditionally he's seated when he records a video. Here Khamenei is standing awkwardly. The substance of the message is the usual stale Islamic Republic platitudes, about "disappointing the enemy," etc. He says "national power is related more to the will of nations and their steadfastness than to missiles and aircraft." A nation whose regime massacres its own people is not strong, it's profoundly weak.

It's a reminder of how his father, when speaking about negotiations, sometimes used a wrestler analogy--"sometimes a wrestler shows flexibility for technical reasons, but he doesn’t forget who his opponent is and what his real goal is."
