My first game project (a long time ago) was built purely on 2D cellular automaton. It can work surprisingly well. I had working prototypes for a platformer, a color-matching puzzle game, a Sokoban like and a Boulder Dash like.

That sounds awesome! Yeah you can really do everything with cellular automata, the only issue with it is the temporal lag

So cool!! how big is one cell in this scene? I'm not sure whether the blocks I see in the shadows are the cell sizes or something different

The lighting only happens at main voxel scale, but in theory to give additional visual quality nearby the camera you can provide a clipmap doing the GI at sub-voxel scale
