Having witnessed Brazil's successful flex-fuel journey firsthand, I have seen how transformative this technology can be for an entire nation. Today, India begins writing its own success story. A future where Indian vehicles are powered by Indian innovation, Indian farmers, and Indian energy. The road ahead is cleaner. The road ahead is greener. The road ahead is more self-reliant. #WATCH | Delhi: On ethanol, Vikram Gulati, Country Head and Executive Vice President (Corporate Affairs and Governance) of Toyota Kirloskar Motor, says, "...I think there is a lot of misunderstanding about the fuel. For example, if you look at it from the automotive sector, there is a lot of myth that if you use E20 blended fuel, vehicles will get damaged. It's a myth. It doesn't happen this way. There's a lot of myth about the amount of mileage loss or the fuel efficiency loss. Yes, there is some fuel efficiency loss, no doubt. But it is not so big as it is being made out to be...E85 and E100, that is, 85% ethanol and 100 % ethanol, are not meant for regular cars. It is meant for a different type of technology, which is called a flex fuel vehicle. This vehicle can take any mix of ethanol. So people need not worry. E20 is the standard fuel that will be available, and it is compatible with old vehicles and new vehicles. All vehicles sold after 1st of April 2023 are fully materially compliant with E20. And people need to be reassured that in 2021, before we went into E20, there was a very detailed scientific study done by the leading automobile testing agency in the country, which is ARAI (Automotive Research Association of India). It clearly established that the possible damage to cars and two wheelers which are old is not there. It's very insignificant. And it also established that the fuel efficiency loss is to the extent of 2 to 4 per cent, not significant." On ethanol, he says, "As per the latest statistics from the government, the program so far has helped save 1.9 trillion rupees. Out of that, 1,60,000 crores has gone to farmers. So in the case of India, it's not only helped us to in some way mitigate the energy crisis, but it's also helped us to help the farmers...The reason why not just India, but many other countries are doing it is for energy security, for the agrarian economy, as well as for fighting climate change and environmental purposes."

The automobile manufacturers, as well as the people who service these vehicles, all say there is no difficulty. Why this sudden interest? We have been using E15 (blend of 15% ethanol and 80% petrol) for the last three and a half years. We have been on E20 (blend of 20% ethanol and 80% petrol) since April of last year. From April 2025 to April 2026, it has already been one year, and we are now another five months beyond that. If someone is suggesting E25 (blend of 25% ethanol and 80% petrol), we have made it clear that we are conducting tests. Those tests will take time. India imports energy worth about ₹150 billion every year; and as our green energy transition moves steadily ahead under PM Sh Narendra Modi Ji’s guidance, we have now achieved 20% ethanol blending. This in effect means that we were able to save about ₹1,40,000 crore on our import bills. At the same time, even as we diversify the feedstock for ethanol production and now include crops like maize which use less water, we have been able to strengthen the agricultural economy by giving ₹40,000 crore annually to our farmers - thus also transforming our Annadatas into Urjadatas. Interacted with senior officers of the Indian Foreign Service participating in the IFS Mid-Career Training Programme-III and discussed India’s energy security and energy diplomacy. As the India Growth Story resonates across the world, India is not merely a participant in the global energy landscape but is increasingly shaping it as the world’s third-largest consumer of energy and oil, third-largest refiner and fourth-largest LNG importer. India’s energy demand is expected to grow 2.5 times by 2047, accounting for around 25% of incremental global demand. Over the past decade, transformative reforms under the leadership of PM Shri Narendra Modi Ji have strengthened domestic capabilities, diversified energy sources, deepened strategic partnerships and accelerated our transition towards cleaner energy. Bro copied the standards for Ethanol policy from USA, but didn't copy their testing results and implementation. Even today, E20 is not mandated in the USA. Standard American gas stations predominantly sell E10 fuel, which holds over 95% of the market share. Higher ethanol blends like E15 have only a 1–2% share. The USA tested E15 and E20 across 86 vehicle models and 6 million miles (96 lakh miles) in 2011, based on which E15 was approved only for new cars that were E15 compliant, while older cars continued to get E10. E20 was not mandated due to engine wear concerns in non-compliant cars, which were in the majority in the USA. And most importantly, unlike India, the USA made their studies public. So what kind of policymaking is this? If you want to copy, either copy everything: the standards, the test results, the implementation, the way ahead, or don't copy anything at all.

Russian oil was never under any sanctions and there was only a price cap, which Indian entities also followed. There’s a lot of rumours online about India heading toward a fuel crisis. The reality is far less dramatic. India currently has enough fuel reserves, so there is no shortage and no talk of rationing. Over the past few years, India has also diversified its oil imports, buying crude from 40+ countries including the US, Russia, Brazil, Guyana and several African nations. So the idea that India depends entirely on the Middle East is simply not true. Even in the case of tensions in the Gulf or a disruption around the Strait of Hormuz, only about 40% of India’s oil passes through that route, and contingency plans—including alternative routes and naval protection for shipments—are already in place. Behind the scenes, the system is far more prepared than people think. India has built strategic underground petroleum reserves, expanded its pipeline network to nearly 26,000 km, and monitoring teams track fuel stocks and supply chains 24×7 to ensure there are no disruptions. On prices, the global market has seen volatility, but domestic impact has been limited. Delhi petrol today is about ₹94.77, slightly lower than ₹95.41 in 2022. Policies over the past few years have also helped cushion shocks—India stepped in to buy discounted Russian oil after 2022, expanded refining capacity, blended 20% ethanol in petrol to reduce imports, cut excise duties to soften price spikes, and expanded CNG stations and piped gas connections across the country. The difference is in execution. Blending remained stuck at roughly 1–1.5% for years before accelerating significantly under the NDA. So, let's first get the politics out of the way. If ethanol blending was acceptable in principle then, why is it suddenly portrayed as anti-people now? Now, let's look at the arguments being presented by critics: CRITICS ARGUMENT 1: E20 FUEL IS BEING PUSHED BY NDA TO KEEP SUGAR CANE FARMERS HAPPY. There's no doubt Ethanol is creating an additional income stream for sugarcane farmers. But governments have always handed out subsidies or incentives to farmers. + MSP exists for 23 crops. Sugar cane farmers get SAP or State Advised Price. + Fertiliser subsidies. + Cheap or free electricity. + Irrigation subsidies. + Procurement policies. If these benefits to farmers are accepted as legitimate public policy, why is E20 policy being targeted in isolation for market distortion? CRITICS ARGUMENT 2: ETHANOL PRODUCTION IS WATER CONSUMING. Yes, sugarcane consumes a great deal of water. But so do + Paddy cultivators. Just look at the tumbling water tables in Punjab, Haryana. + AI and data centers. + Semiconductor manufacturing. + Steel and cement production. The question is not whether something uses water, but whether the benefits justify the costs. Again why are critics holding E20 alone to a test that they don't set for others? CRITICS ARGUMENT 3: THE GOVERNMENT SHOULD NOT MAKE E20 MANDATORY. LEAVE IT TO CHOICE. We're in a democracy and choice matters. But governments routinely make decisions that we, the people have no choice but to accept. + Taxation rates + Emission norms. + Fuel quality standards. + Safety regulations. + Identity Proof. These are often choices imposed to achieve broader national goals. Shouldn't E20 should be judged in the same way? Here's how E20 usage serves NATIONAL INTEREST: + India imports 85–90% of its crude oil. E20 seeks to address that by replacing up to 20% of petrol volume with domestically produced ethanol, helping diversify the fuel mix and reducing import costs. + With E20 NDA estimates saving Rs 1 lakh crore in foreign-exchange. CRITICS ARGUMENT 4: COST OF CAR ENGINE WEAR AND TEAR, MILEAGE INEFFICIENCY OUTWEIGHS BENEFITS. It is true that Ethanol has about 34% less energy per litre than petrol. But because E20 contains only 20% ethanol, the overall energy content of the fuel falls by roughly 4%–7%. So at 5% a car that gives 20 km/L on pure petrol will give 19km/L. But usage also improves air quality. Which increases longevity in humans and lowers healthcare costs over time. That is s fair trade-off. CONCLUSION: Every policy is a trade off. E20 isn't perfect. But if agricultural subsidies, procurement, irrigation policy and fuel regulations are accepted as legitimate public policy, then judge ethanol using the same yardstick.

When you know American funded NGOs were stopping nuclear plants, changing election narratives and funding religious conversions until India passed one law to track the money, the outrage from Washington suddenly makes complete sense. India did not ban foreign funding. It simply asked two questions. Who is sending the money and where is it going. That is all. Two questions. And the reaction from American lawmakers and Christian advocacy groups has been explosive enough to send the US Ambassador rushing to Amit Shah's office straight off an international flight. Ask yourself why those two questions are so threatening. The pattern that intelligence reports flagged over years was consistent. Foreign money flows in through NGO structures. Agendas flow out through activism, narratives and on-the-ground operations.
