Tesla FSD 14.3.3 just saved me from a potential side-swipe collision — again. Watch this: I’m cruising in the right lane at ~45 mph when the green station wagon on my left suddenly drifts over, cutting sharply into my lane and toward the shoulder. FSD spots the intrusion instantly, smoothly steers right to create maximum safe distance, and progressively slows us down while keeping everything controlled. Speed matters. A Waymo vehicle was driving in a 25mph zone in LA when an oncoming car swerved into our lane while speeding up to over 70mph… 3x the speed means 9x the destructive energy. Good to see the Waymo Driver react early and safely to make room.

A 21-year-old trailer driver was killed after becoming trapped in the wreckage of a pre-dawn collision with another lorry, while his seven-month-pregnant wife escaped with minor injuries after members of the public pulled her to safety. The 26-year-old woman was travelling in the cab of the Volvo trailer driven by her husband when it collided with a Hino trailer carrying 36 tonnes of steel on the main road near Kampung Tebuk Marso in Sungai Besar, Selangor, at about 2.49am. Selangor Fire and Rescue Department assistant operations director Ashrul Riezal Asbar said initial reports showed the crash involved the two heavy vehicles.

Bronx: East 136th Street & Bruckner Blvd, a serious multi-vehicle crash involving three commercial trucks left one driver critically injured Tuesday morning, prompting a large FDNY rescue response. Just before 11:30 a.m., the #FDNY and officers from the NYPD 40th Precinct responded to the scene after reports of a collision. According to a preliminary investigation, a truck operated by a 64-year-old man was traveling northbound in the right lane of Bruckner Boulevard when it rear-ended a second truck driven by a 48-year-old man. The force of the impact pushed the second truck into a third truck that had been stopped at a red light, operated by a 46-year-old man. The crash left the first truck severely damaged, trapping the 64-year-old driver inside the cab. FDNY firefighters used hydraulic rescue tools to extricate him as EMS staged nearby. The injured driver was transported to Lincoln Hospital in serious condition. The operators of the second and third trucks were taken to area hospitals with minor injuries.

Here’s a good example of a nav disengagement. It’s disappointing to see these still happening in V14.3. This is a pretty straightforward setup. 3 lanes, clearly marked signage, large queue in the turning lane. Before I took over, FSD seemed completely unaware that it needed to stage the turn in the left lane, and would’ve missed the queue/tried to sneak in had I not taken over. You’d expect by now that it’d be able to gather context from the overhead signs, and sometimes it feels like it does, but I guess it really doesn’t and probably relies on map data.

For the car approaching from behind at 100 km/h, the closing speed skyrockets to 110 km/h, slashing the time before collision to just 1.6 seconds. In reality, it is even worse: because drivers never expect a vehicle to reverse on an expressway, their brains freeze. Reaction time jumps from 1 second to 2, 3, or more. At high speeds, drivers often crash before even realizing they need to brake. That's why reversing on an expressway is hundred times more dangerous than a sudden braking. A maneuver that feels slow to the reversing driver creates an unexpectedly violent closing speed for those behind, leaving virtually no time to react. In the video, a family of seven missed their exit on the Dehradun expressway to Haridwar. They reversed, were struck from behind, and four of them died.

WOW v14.3.2 is very decisive and is able to execute with great confidence. Big fan. That said, in my first drive it messed up *spectacularly* twice in <15 miles of suburban driving. In one instance, it swerved out of its through lane of traffic into a lane that was ending, right as it was ending. It was not trying to overtake any vehicles, it just swerved over violently. ugh The other, in the video below, it did not consider that the left lane was turn-only, and tried to use it overtake other vehicles while their light was red. (this intersection begins with left turn green and through-lanes red) It is still very slow to merge into the proper lane in time for a turn, and ended up cutting off a large truck to make its turn. Could it have completed its maneuvers and continued without intervention? Yes. Would it be safe or legal to do so? No. Plenty of work left to do on FSD.
