Watch this: I’m cruising in the right lane at ~45 mph when the green station wagon on my left suddenly drifts over, cutting sharply into my lane and toward the shoulder. FSD spots the intrusion instantly, smoothly steers right to create maximum safe distance, and progressively slows us down while keeping everything controlled. The company that built the car sitting next to that Waymo, the Tesla, is exactly why Waymo’s business won’t survive in the long run. You can’t compete with a company that builds its own cars from the ground up, its own AI, its own chips, its own charging network, and has real-world data from millions of vehicles with the greatest entrepreneur our of our time at the helm. I bet people will be looking back at this moment in history and say that I was right.

Bronx: East 136th Street & Bruckner Blvd, a serious multi-vehicle crash involving three commercial trucks left one driver critically injured Tuesday morning, prompting a large FDNY rescue response. Just before 11:30 a.m., the #FDNY and officers from the NYPD 40th Precinct responded to the scene after reports of a collision. According to a preliminary investigation, a truck operated by a 64-year-old man was traveling northbound in the right lane of Bruckner Boulevard when it rear-ended a second truck driven by a 48-year-old man. The force of the impact pushed the second truck into a third truck that had been stopped at a red light, operated by a 46-year-old man. The crash left the first truck severely damaged, trapping the 64-year-old driver inside the cab. FDNY firefighters used hydraulic rescue tools to extricate him as EMS staged nearby. For an alert driver, 1 second is reaction time, leaving 2.5 seconds to brake and stop safely. Now, consider the same 50-meter gap, but the front car is reversing at 10 km/h. For the car approaching from behind at 100 km/h, the closing speed skyrockets to 110 km/h, slashing the time before collision to just 1.6 seconds. In reality, it is even worse: because drivers never expect a vehicle to reverse on an expressway, their brains freeze. Reaction time jumps from 1 second to 2, 3, or more. At high speeds, drivers often crash before even realizing they need to brake. That's why reversing on an expressway is hundred times more dangerous than a sudden braking. A maneuver that feels slow to the reversing driver creates an unexpectedly violent closing speed for those behind, leaving virtually no time to react. WOW v14.3.2 is very decisive and is able to execute with great confidence. Big fan. That said, in my first drive it messed up *spectacularly* twice in <15 miles of suburban driving. In one instance, it swerved out of its through lane of traffic into a lane that was ending, right as it was ending. It was not trying to overtake any vehicles, it just swerved over violently. ugh The other, in the video below, it did not consider that the left lane was turn-only, and tried to use it overtake other vehicles while their light was red. (this intersection begins with left turn green and through-lanes red) It is still very slow to merge into the proper lane in time for a turn, and ended up cutting off a large truck to make its turn. Could it have completed its maneuvers and continued without intervention? Yes. Would it be safe or legal to do so? No. Plenty of work left to do on FSD.

I’ve noticed a new behavior in FSD version 14.2.2.2: when approaching an intersection from a single dedicated left-turn lane, the car occasionally completes the turn into the second lane from the left rather than the leftmost lane, which is what most drivers typically do. Interestingly it is legal to do so in California.

Uber is Dead, my reflections on Waymo I’ve been in San Francisco for just over a week, during which I’ve taken 7 rides with Waymo, a similar number with Uber, and a few with FSD Teslas. My journey to SFO via Uber was alarming—the driver veered out of the lane multiple times and nearly crashed on a ramp, seemingly vying for a one-star rating or to genuinely scare me. Conversely, my experiences with Waymo were virtually flawless, if you don’t consider overly cautious driving a fault. I experienced a minor hiccup when we got stuck behind parked cars because the vehicle thought they were queuing at a red light. It quickly resolved the confusion and moved on, which was rather amusing. Waymo, and other Level 5 autonomous vehicles, are poised to revolutionize the movement of people and goods. The most apt analogy I can think of is that Waymo is transforming the real world into an automated Amazon warehouse, with people as the goods and Waymo vehicles as the robots shuttling them around. With the advent of personal transportation becoming incredibly affordable, sending anything from point A to point B using a self-driving electric vehicle will soon be within easy reach. One of Waymo’s standout features is privacy. Riding in an Uber often means being subjected to the driver’s loud group chats on some app, making the journey neither quiet nor private. In contrast, Waymo offers a fully private experience, allowing you to have confidential phone conversations or chat freely with fellow passengers without distraction. Waymo also reimagines the concept of a car. Without the need for a driver, we can eliminate the front console, reduce weight, and remove the steering wheel. This opens up possibilities for passenger seats to be reoriented, perhaps facing backwards, or for the vehicle to become a mobile living room. Tomorrow’s vehicle designs will differ drastically from today’s. Destinations that are currently expensive and logistically complicated to reach via Taxi/Uber, often lying outside public transport routes, can be simplified to a single “Waymo” journey. This could shift the current model of “Uber + public transport + Uber” to a more streamlined experience. As more cars become self-driving, we could see a reduction in the amount of time cars are parked—from 99% of their lifetime to perhaps just 25%. This not only improves unit economics but could also decrease the number of cars on the road. This transition represents one of the most significant shifts for Generation X. In conclusion, the future is autonomous, electric, and efficient. Uber, as we know it, is dead.

An unidentified pedestrian was killed after being hit by a car at kilometre 9.4 of the New Klang Valley Expressway (NKVE) here on Friday (Jan 10). Shah Alam district police chief ACP Ramsay Embol said the incident occurred at 11.15 pm and involved a car driven by a local man and a male pedestrian believed to be between 50 and 60 years old. “The accident occurred when the pedestrian suddenly crossed the road and was in the middle of the second lane from the right after the ELITE Expressway interchange, heading from Klang towards Damansara, before being struck by a car travelling straight along the lane. “The collision resulted in the pedestrian dying at the scene ,” he said in a statement.
