How it started and how it is going ! Declared in 1940 as India’s first wildlife sanctuary, Mudumalai Tiger Reserve is a thriving Tiger Reserve. With a total area of 688.59 sq. km and forming part of the Nilgiris Biosphere Reserve, it now supports an estimated 165 tigers (2024-25), up from 129 in 2023-24. It is also home to 131 leopards, 534 elephants, and 19 striped hyenas, making it a biodiversity hotspot. As the highest tiger density area in Tamil Nadu, Mudumalai plays a vital role in wildlife dispersal between the Eastern and Western Ghats, anchoring South India’s conservation landscape. A majestic tigress cools off in a stream in the Mudumalai Tiger Reserve in Tamil Nadu. Tiger conservation in India has taken a giant leap bringing back Tigers from the brink of extinction to more than 3000 Tigers now thanks to the brilliant #ProjectTiger launched in 1973 which ensured use of advanced wildlife technology, involvent of local communities in Tiger Conservation and increasing Tiger reserves from 9 with an area of about 18,000 Sq Kms at the start of the Project to 53 Tiger Reserves covering an area of more than 75,000 Sq Kms. In Tamil Nadu Tiger numbers have seen a four fold rise from 76 Tigers in 2006 to 306 Tigers now as per the National Tiger Conservation Authority.
