How it started and how it is going ! Declared in 1940 as India’s first wildlife sanctuary, Mudumalai Tiger Reserve is a thriving Tiger Reserve. With a total area of 688.59 sq. km and forming part of the Nilgiris Biosphere Reserve, it now supports an estimated 165 tigers (2024-25), up from 129 in 2023-24. It is also home to 131 leopards, 534 elephants, and 19 striped hyenas, making it a biodiversity hotspot. As the highest tiger density area in Tamil Nadu, Mudumalai plays a vital role in wildlife dispersal between the Eastern and Western Ghats, anchoring South India’s conservation landscape.
