A herd of elk is nothing unusual in Maggie Valley, N.C., these days. But 25 years ago, the animals were just getting their footing in Cataloochee after being reintroduced. (Credit: Sarah Allison) Watch "Elk: A Reintroduction" 📺

RAISE THE HOOF: A mother and daughter were left stunned after spotting a massive elk herd taking over backyards in a Colorado neighborhood. The mom says the elk were roaming around — “taking up every bit of space.” And while it’s a wild sight, it’s not the herd’s first public hangout. They were recently spotted strolling along a nearby highway — and even shutting down a local golf course in the process.

Not my video, but wanted to share it. This is a huge herd of elk in Oregon. Here in Alberta, we often associate Elk with the Rockies, but the mountains are not really their preferred habitat. As people settled into the prairies hundreds of years ago, the elk moved to the safety of the mountains. These days Alberta elk are feeling less "pressure", and are slowly moving back to the prairies. There are huge herds up north in Grande Prairie, around Edson, and as far east as Medicine Hat. I even have a herd close to my house. 1/

Six years ago, a donkey named Diesel went missing in Wyoming. He’s now part of an elk herd. Experts say this kind of cross-species bond is rare, and since he appears safe, officials have allowed him to remain with his adopted elk family 🫏

Herd of elk adopt a donkey who went missing over five years ago in Auburn, California. The donkey's name is Diesel and he ran away from his owner in 2019 after getting 'spooked' while trail packing. While on a hunting trip, pro triathlete Max Fennell noticed a donkey in the middle of a herd of elk. "Probably one of my wildest hunting trips to date. I bumped into a herd of elk that have adopted a donkey. I can't get over seeing it and I'm amazed that the donkey looks happy and healthy," he posted on Instagram. The donkey's owner, David Drewry, responded to Fennell's post. "That is in fact Diesel. He got away from me while packing out there 5 years ago. It was heartbreaking at the time. Glad to see he is helping the herd grow."

Tourists in Colorado crowding elk for phone footage until one of them charged and sent a guy sprawling Elk look docile because they're standing in a parking lot eating grass. They are NOT. Bull elk hit 1,100 pounds. Cows run 500 to 600. A cow protecting a calf will close 30 feet before you finish reacting. A 2026 study found elk attack more people than any other wild animal in North America.

A bull elk wasn’t backing down as it charged at vehicles along a road in Estes Park, Colorado. Elk rutting season is in full swing. The fall mating season can make bulls more territorial and aggressive, making it especially important to give them plenty of space.

🦌😳😅😂 Group of tourist were warned but decided it was good idea to get close to a big bull elk during rut season in Estes Park Colorado. Many tourist dont care. I dont get why they want to get so close to the elk. It just makes no sense. Some people have to learn the lesson the hard way. They got lucky this time 📹: theuntamedview #elk #Colorado #trending

Unexpected Road Rage! 🦌🚘 A man jokingly asked an elk if it wanted to fight on a Colorado road, and the elk didn't hesitate to answer by ramming his car's front tire! A reminder of what can happen when you mess with wildlife!

Wolves in Yellowstone didn't eat their way through the elk herd so much as they changed where elk stood, pushing them off the meadows and onto steep slopes where they could escape predation but ended up starving in winters that used to be manageable.
