Herd of elk adopt a donkey who went missing over five years ago in Auburn, California. The donkey's name is Diesel and he ran away from his owner in 2019 after getting 'spooked' while trail packing. While on a hunting trip, pro triathlete Max Fennell noticed a donkey in the middle of a herd of elk. "Probably one of my wildest hunting trips to date. I bumped into a herd of elk that have adopted a donkey. I can't get over seeing it and I'm amazed that the donkey looks happy and healthy," he posted on Instagram. The donkey's owner, David Drewry, responded to Fennell's post. "That is in fact Diesel. He got away from me while packing out there 5 years ago. It was heartbreaking at the time. Glad to see he is helping the herd grow."

7 years ago a pet donkey named Diesel ran away during a hiking trip in California. He was spooked by a mountain lion on the trail and bolted into the wilderness. His owners searched for him on foot and with drones but eventually had to stop looking. Five years later a hunter spotted a herd of wild elk and noticed a strange animal moving with them. It was Diesel. He had been adopted by the herd and was living completely wild. His owners identified him from the footage but decided to leave him with his new family rather than trying to capture him.

RAISE THE HOOF: A mother and daughter were left stunned after spotting a massive elk herd taking over backyards in a Colorado neighborhood. The mom says the elk were roaming around — “taking up every bit of space.” And while it’s a wild sight, it’s not the herd’s first public hangout. They were recently spotted strolling along a nearby highway — and even shutting down a local golf course in the process.

A herd of elk is nothing unusual in Maggie Valley, N.C., these days. But 25 years ago, the animals were just getting their footing in Cataloochee after being reintroduced. (Credit: Sarah Allison) Watch "Elk: A Reintroduction" 📺

Wolves in Yellowstone didn't eat their way through the elk herd so much as they changed where elk stood, pushing them off the meadows and onto steep slopes where they could escape predation but ended up starving in winters that used to be manageable.

Six years ago a Donkey named Diesel went missing in Wyoming. He's now part of an Elk community. Experts call it rare: a Donkey forming a deep bond with a completely different species for companionship and survival. Since he appears safe, officials chose to let him remain with his adopted Elk family

Not my video, but wanted to share it. This is a huge herd of elk in Oregon. Here in Alberta, we often associate Elk with the Rockies, but the mountains are not really their preferred habitat. As people settled into the prairies hundreds of years ago, the elk moved to the safety of the mountains. These days Alberta elk are feeling less "pressure", and are slowly moving back to the prairies. There are huge herds up north in Grande Prairie, around Edson, and as far east as Medicine Hat. I even have a herd close to my house. 1/
