physics did not tell us that this wasn't possible - it was too high risk for risk averse, profit-centric ULA. Space exploration lagged to to complacency and margins. Systems Engineering, vision, a willingness to take risks proved that ambition is the best route to success.

And if the gravity were even 10 percent or 20 percent higher, we'd be stuck on Earth forever. We certainly couldn't use conventional rockets. You'd have to blow yourself off the surface with a nuclear bomb, or something crazy. So, on the other hand, if Earth's gravity was just a little lower, like even 10 percent, 20 percent lower, then getting to orbit would be easy.
