Emergency personnel removed two people from the water; one was in very serious condition and the other was uninjured. Wallace said they were looking for upward of seven people and that rescue efforts would continue for hours.

The White House is “closely monitoring” the developments at the bridge and so far has seen “no indication of any nefarious intent,” according to a White House official who spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss internal deliberations.

This is exactly the same way the Sunshine Skyway Bridge collapsed 43 years ago. Were bumper islands added to protect the bridge piers from collision? As we sort through this tragedy, we must take steps to protect all our bridges from this kind of impact. The danger is real.

The way the bridge collapsed after the collision makes me think that it was already deeply cracked (a phenomenon known as #hydrogen_embrittlemnt) thats why it didn't stand the impact.
