A major bridge in Baltimore collapsed after being hit by a freighter early Tuesday. Baltimore Fire Chief James Wallace said several people were likely on Francis Scott Key Bridge when it collapsed and that vehicles have been detected in the water.

Emergency personnel removed two people from the water; one was in very serious condition and the other was uninjured. Wallace said they were looking for upward of seven people and that rescue efforts would continue for hours.

This is exactly the same way the Sunshine Skyway Bridge collapsed 43 years ago. Were bumper islands added to protect the bridge piers from collision? As we sort through this tragedy, we must take steps to protect all our bridges from this kind of impact. The danger is real.

The way the bridge collapsed after the collision makes me think that it was already deeply cracked (a phenomenon known as #hydrogen_embrittlemnt) thats why it didn't stand the impact.
