Today I was put in a very uncomfortable situation with a man who I did not know. I was approached whilst sat on a bench, despite there being 2 or 3 other empty benches around me, and then forced to engage in a conversation where I was asked very personal questions about my job and where I live. This man was a 62 year old Somalian (all details he shared with me) who told me that he “would love to marry a lovely British woman”. Despite me not entertaining his conversation, and giving him very blunt, one-worded responses, he insisted on speaking to me for longer than I felt was appropriate. I didn’t want him to react in anger if I asked him to leave so I sat there whilst he spoke to me and eventually he walked away. Had I felt that I’d been in any physical danger, I, of course, would’ve removed myself from the situation. Women should never be made to feel uncomfortable in public, especially their own workplace.
