167 people were asked to leave their home so a government could test nuclear bombs on it. Between 1946 and 1958, the United States detonated 23 nuclear weapons on Bikini Atoll in the Marshall Islands. The residents were promised they could return. They never did. The largest blast, Castle Bravo in 1954, was 1,000 times more powerful than the bomb dropped on Hiroshima. Scientists expected a 6 megaton yield. It produced 15. The explosion left a crater a mile wide and 200 feet deep where islands once stood. Radioactive fallout reached four continents. Today, 80 years later, the atoll is still too contaminated to live on, and the descendants of those 167 people remain scattered across other islands.
