According to reports from a closed-door Senate meeting, the Acting Attorney General could not guarantee that the proposed $1.776 billion anti-weaponization fund would exclude January 6 defendants. That got lawmakers' attention. The concern wasn't about the size of the fund. It was whether people convicted of assaulting police officers during the Capitol attack could potentially receive compensation from it. That's why opposition isn't just coming from Democrats. It's coming from Republicans who say that possibility is a political and moral nonstarter.

JUST IN: A federal judge put Trump's $1.7 billion slush fund on notice. Judge Richard Leon pressed DOJ lawyers to put in writing that the fund isn't moving forward. When asked why they wouldn't, the DOJ's answer was: "I don't know." The fund survived today's hearing, but the judge delivered a pointed warning to the DOJ: if the administration is telling the court the fund is not moving forward, then it better not move forward.
