According to reports from a closed-door Senate meeting, the Acting Attorney General could not guarantee that the proposed $1.776 billion anti-weaponization fund would exclude January 6 defendants. That got lawmakers' attention. The concern wasn't about the size of the fund. It was whether people convicted of assaulting police officers during the Capitol attack could potentially receive compensation from it. That's why opposition isn't just coming from Democrats. This week the Trump Justice Department created a $1.7 billion slush fund to pay off Jan. 6 rioters and Trump allies. He wants to use your tax dollars to compensate people who claim the Biden DOJ was unfair to them. This travesty is the outcome of Trump's personal lawsuit against the IRS — the one over the fact that someone leaked his tax returns during the Biden administration. Trump said at the time the money would go to charity. It is not going to charity. I've spent my career in criminal justice reform. I know the people this system has actually harmed. People who were completely innocent — who sat in prison for 20 years, 30 years, for crimes they did not commit. When they got out, they got nothing. To pick THIS group — Jan. 6 rioters, some of whom beat police officers — and write them a $1.7 billion check from the American taxpayer is NOT justice. It is an insult.

Ahead of a vote to install Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche permanently at the Justice Department, Sen. Bill Cassidy (R-LA) said “the president has sent conflicting signals” about the future of the so-called anti-weaponization fund, and “that's something that has to be sorted out before the vote.” When asked about the DOJ’s effort to prevent the U.S. from prosecuting claims against the president, his businesses, or his family, Cassidy said, “I would object to anything that goes against the kind of spirit of that, and making one person above the law is wrong.”
