According to reports from a closed-door Senate meeting, the Acting Attorney General could not guarantee that the proposed $1.776 billion anti-weaponization fund would exclude January 6 defendants. That got lawmakers' attention. The concern wasn't about the size of the fund. It was whether people convicted of assaulting police officers during the Capitol attack could potentially receive compensation from it. That's why opposition isn't just coming from Democrats. It's coming from Republicans who say that possibility is a political and moral nonstarter.

When asked why they wouldn't, the DOJ's answer was: "I don't know."
