I took this video while descending from the summit of Mt Everest (8,848.86 m) and approaching Everest Base Camp on 22 May 2026. Crossing the Khumbu Icefall has always meant navigating collapsing seracs, shifting ladders, and deep crevasses, but now another danger is rapidly appearing across the glacier: newly formed meltwater streams flowing through the ice itself. This did not feel like the Everest I first knew. It felt like witnessing the meltdown of the world’s highest mountain. During the 2026 Everest season, I walked beneath the Khumbu Icefall and felt something deeply unsettling. The mountain no longer looked frozen and permanent. It looked fragile. It looked wounded. Scientists have repeatedly warned that the Himalaya is warming faster than the global average. Study after study shows Himalayan glaciers are melting at an accelerating rate due to rising global temperatures caused by climate change. Some research suggests glaciers across the Hindu Kush–Himalaya region have lost ice significantly faster in recent decades than they did during the previous centuries. If global warming continues unchecked, experts warn that up to one-third, and potentially far more, of Himalayan glacier ice could disappear by the end of this century. What I witnessed on Everest no longer feels distant or theoretical. The warning signs are already here. The ice beneath climbers’ feet is changing. Meltwater is flowing through places that were once permanently frozen. Ancient bodies trapped beneath glaciers are reappearing. Seracs are becoming more unstable. Entire sections of the mountain feel more unpredictable than ever before. For millions of people across Asia, this is not only about mountaineering. The Himalaya is often called the “Third Pole” because it stores one of the world’s largest reserves of ice outside the Arctic and Antarctica. These glaciers feed rivers that support nearly two billion people downstream. What happens here will eventually affect water, food, disasters, and survival far beyond the mountains themselves. As a mountaineer moments like this deeply affect me. We come to these mountains chasing dreams, and summits, but the mountains are now showing us their pain through melting ice, unstable glaciers, collapsing seracs, and silence. Everest is speaking to humanity through this meltdown. The question is whether the world will finally listen before these warnings become irreversible.

Retreating ice at Alaska's Mendenhall Glacier is exposing ancient tree stumps. Carbon dating places the stumps at around 1,000 to 2,000 years old. Forests once grew where ice now sits. Glaciers have been gradually pulling back since the end of the Little Ice Age, since the 1800s. As they recede, they're exposing land that was previously ice-free as recently as 1,000 years ago (when CO2 levels were far lower than they are today). We see this not only in Alaska, but across the Arctic. Retreating ice is uncovering soils, wood, and organic material. In Greenland, buried soils, plant remains, and insects have also been found beneath the ice. These are direct physical records of far warmer temperatures in the recent past. The terminal moraines left by Little Ice Age glaciers are preserved across the landscape worldwide, and what they show is unambiguous - those glaciers reached their greatest extent since the end of the great Ice Age approximately 11,000 years ago. The Little Ice Age represented a cold extreme within the Holocene, not a neutral mid-point in a stable climate system. Randall Carlson's argument is geological rather than political. When sea level rise and temperature increase are measured against a baseline drawn from the end of the Little Ice Age, that baseline sits at one of the coldest points of the last 10,000 years. A return from an anomalous cold extreme toward the warmer conditions that characterised most of the Holocene will, by definition, produce an upward curve on any graph. In fact, no decline in sea ice has been observed in 18 years, longer if you take into account the artificial drop post-2007 which was due to a sensor and an algorithmic change. Mainstream scientists are of course dumbfounded by this pause. One paper (Swart 2015) claimed that an 18-year pause in melting was less than 10% likely. Experts underestimated the resilience of Arctic sea ice, assigning more than a 90% chance against what has actually happened. The ice is not disappearing. The models have been proven wrong.

The ice in the Arctic and Antarctica plays critical roles in maintaining life on Earth. They are the biggest reservoirs of freshwater on the planet and help steer ocean currents, which are major drivers of our weather. But if enough of that ice melts, sea levels could rise all over the world. That’s why a team of scientists is studying the Thwaites Glacier, nicknamed the "Doomsday Glacier," which is roughly the size of Florida and melting fast. PBS News Hour’s science correspondent Miles O’Brien joined Horizons host William Brangham from the western coast of Antarctica, where he is aboard a scientific expedition to report on the glacier. "Let’s remember the glacier’s not the villain," O’Brien told Brangham. "Human beings are the villain that are making the ice melt." O'Brien noted that Thwaites itself "contains enough, if melted, enough water to raise sea level, the world over, 2.5 feet." But the glacier also buttresses two other ice shelves. "If it starts this cascade of melt and collapse, there would be very little to stop it from causing about 10 feet of sea level rise all over the world," he said. The ice in the Arctic and Antarctica plays critical roles in maintaining life on Earth. They are the biggest reservoirs of freshwater on the planet and help steer ocean currents, which are major drivers of our weather. But if enough of that ice melts, sea levels could rise all over the world. That’s why a team of scientists is studying the Thwaites Glacier, nicknamed the "Doomsday Glacier," which is roughly the size of Florida and melting fast. PBS News Hour’s science correspondent Miles O’Brien joined Horizons host William Brangham from the western coast of Antarctica, where he is aboard a scientific expedition to report on the glacier. "Let’s remember the glacier’s not the villain," O’Brien told Brangham. "Human beings are the villain that are making the ice melt." O'Brien noted that Thwaites itself "contains enough, if melted, enough water to raise sea level, the world over, 2.5 feet." But the glacier also buttresses two other ice shelves. "If it starts this cascade of melt and collapse, there would be very little to stop it from causing about 10 feet of sea level rise all over the world," he said. Yet today, the glaciers are still there about the same size they were 35 years ago. Decade after decade, the doomsday dates change, but the climate alarmist script persists.

The region covers about 1.3 million km2 and includes the waters leading into the Northwest Passage - the sector often used to sell the "opening Arctic" scare story. But 2026 is running as one of the strongest ice years in the Canadian record back to 1981. High arctic temperatures, north of 80N, are still struggling to rise above freezing even into the second week of July. In 2026 the melt season threshold has barely arrived which is unprecedented in record books dating back to 1958. Western Arctic ice is at a 13 year high. The High Arctic has never been colder. This is not being reported on.
