No matter what the fallout is from this, even if there were fatalities, this practice of using elephants to add pomp and pageantry to these peraheras or parades will not change. Sad situation but it’s the undeniable truth of the matter.

Her daughter, Guillermina, was born there, both living in a small concrete pit enclosure, never eating the wild grasses or playing in the mud. The people who ran the zoo decided to do the right thing for the animals and began finding sanctuaries for them. An elephant sanctuary in Brazil agreed to take Pocha and Guillermina and plans were made for the transfer. The girls seemed to understand what was happening and the zoo staff were emotional as they said goodbye.
