A swift and highly skilled wildlife rescue in Manapparai Forest Range, Trichy, saw an Indian gaur safely brought out of an open agricultural well after nearly eight hours of coordinated effort by the Forest Department and Fire & Rescue Services. With conventional rescue methods ruled out, the team relied on precise veterinary intervention and a crane operation to bring the animal to safety, after which it was treated for minor injuries and released back into the Reserve Forest. At Muthanga Wildlife Sanctuary I met Dr.Arun Zacharia, an accomplished veterinary surgeon who is also a font of knowledge regarding wild animals, the forest and related issues. His experience and that of the forest officials is key to understanding and managing the animal-man conflict in the area. Part of this effort is the training and use of Kumki elephants that drive away rogue wild elephants when they stray into human habitations. Man- animal conflict in Wayanad is a complex problem for which all of us have to collaborate and find workable solutions.

An 800-kg wild gaur walked more than 300 km across Tamil Nadu, from the forests of Trichy to the shores of Pamban. What followed was one of the most complex wildlife operations undertaken in the state. After a month of tracking the animal through human-dominated landscapes, and when all efforts to guide it back to suitable habitat failed, the Tamil Nadu Forest Department carried out the state’s first long-distance gaur translocation. Nearly 100 personnel, including expert veterinarians and trackers, worked in challenging coastal terrain to safely tranquilize, transport and release the animal in a Reserve Forest in Dindigul after a 13-hour capture operation and a 9-hour journey. Translocating a gaur is among the most challenging wildlife management tasks. This successful operation marks a significant milestone in conflict mitigation and wildlife management, while providing valuable lessons for future human-wildlife conflict situations. Kudos to the entire team 👏👏💪
