Who’s Helping Myanmar After the Devastating Earthquake? Around 20 countries including China, Thailand, South Korea, ASEAN nations, the United States, the United Kingdom and Australia have sent rescue teams, paramedics, sniffer dogs and emergency aid to Myanmar after the country was struck by its most powerful earthquake in a century on Friday. Of those countries, 15 sent rescue teams comprising a total of 1,915 members as of Wednesday, the junta said. Mandalay airport significantly damaged after 7.7 magnitude earthquake hits central Myanmar. The epicenter of the quake was registered by the United States Geological Survey (USGS) as 16 km north-northwest of Sagaing at 1:20 PM local time, at a depth of 10 km. It also said the quake was registered in neighboring countries. Myanmar has been ruled by a military junta since a coup in 2021, making access to information difficult. The state controls almost all of local radio, television, print and online media. Internet use is also restricted.

They were brave enough to put on their Red Cross and Red Crescent vests to make the world a better place in the most challenging of times. Yet since the beginning of the year, 28 of our volunteers and staff have died or been killed while performing their humanitarian duties. In such a short time period, this is among the highest levels of global violence against National Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies’ teams that we’ve ever experienced. The IFRC is calling for immediate and urgent action to protect humanitarian volunteers and staff around the world. Without protection and respect we cannot reach people and perform our lifesaving work. Together, we can #ProtectHumanity. #WorldHumanitarianDay2024
