A professor and I debate equity at our college

I'm sorry, but if you can't understand or are willing to play dumb enough to make people believe you can't understand how equity is by definition discriminatory and anti-meritocratic, you really shouldn't be a teacher. Which means most teachers shouldn't be teachers.

love how you calmly and clearly explain the equity piece (outcome based on immutable characteristics instead of meritocracy) 🫡 and the professor dances around it, avoiding at all costs to admit the hypocrisy of it all I'm stunned at myself not realizing when did society drop meritocracy in favor of anything else (guess it was the boiling frog phenomenon) 🤦‍♂️ and how insidious the whole thing is

There are not enough _____ teachers because we have been discriminating based on _______. Therefore we will stop discriminating based on _______ which will result in more _______ teachers being hired. But we will not hire based on _______ or else we will end up getting lower quality teachers among _______ resulting in a fulfillment of prophecy by those who discriminate based on _______ bc they will be of lower quality teachers on average. This will then reault in growing support to discriminate based on ______ as the stereotype becomes more pronounced. 👆why don’t I hear this line of thinking more often?

This guy is a professor? He doesn't know what equity is?

His reasoning reminds me of my dad's. Admitting that hiring based purely on skin color is wrong is easy, but when they realize that logic leads to fewer minorities being selected, it's like a fear response kicks in. Straight answers are suddenly absent, replaced with vague deflections like "well, I think diversity is good" or "I don’t think it’s always about race" (i.e. "well, I'm not racist though!") Deep down they seem to know the whole "diversity is our strength" narrative is flawed, but opposition to it has been so deeply ingrained as "racist" that they can’t bring themselves to contradict it outright.

wait you never explain why it's a "foolish game" to play. also you can try to hire more black/brown/asian etc people (who are still qualified) by casting a wider net. So no you don't have to sacrifice quality by hiring more diverse people. you can have both things dude
